I have McAfee Security Centre and for the past few days I have been getting pop ups about various trojans which cannot be cleaned, deleted or quaranteened:

    Back Door CVT
    Downloader - AUX
    Generic Downloader
    Puper
    Vundo
    New Poly Win 32

    new today: Generic StartPage.o

I have read and run all your suggested programs and the results of the scans are attached. I'm not sure where to go from here, help!

    thanks you

(pc details: Dell Dimension DV051, Windows XP Media Centre Edition, Service Pack 2. Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz, 2.79GHz, 0.99 GB of RAM)

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

    You hvae a few problems!

Start by running this: Virtumonde aka Trojan Vundo Removal and then attach the requested VundoFix log to your next message.

Now please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).

Please attach this report into your next message.

Note : process.exe, which is part of the SmitfraudFix tool, is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Okay as I expected, you have a new form of this SmitFraud family of infections.

Please run this procedure SpywareQuake & SpyFalcon Removal Procedure

And afterwards attach the requested smitfiles.txt log along with a new HJT log.

Note you will not find ALL files in the lists for deletion because the fix is generic to cover dozens of forms. Also the smitrem program will have deleted some already. Just make sure you check for all files anyway to be save. One that I know I saw in your logs that you definitely should double check for is C:\WINDOWS\system32\hvcycg.dll

This will be in the removal procedure as %System32%\hvcycg.dll

We will have some more work to do after this, but this is a good start.

Have run the scans, the file you mentioned is no longer in system 32, so we're hopefully getting somewhere.

I had similar files in my system to the ones on your list to be deleted. They had one letter missing etc. I didn't deleted them but not sure if they should be!

    thanks again.

Is your copy of Ewido a paid version or a free trial version?

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
    O4 - Startup: .protected
    O4 - Global Startup: .protected
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqpqpq - ssqpqpq.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winzzc32 - winzzc32.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\Temp <--- delete all file in this Temp folder. Windows will block deleting about 2 or 3 of them.
    C:\Documents and Settings\logmein\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\OPEJWPMV\wind32[1].exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\byxutqp.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljijhg.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\nnnmjgg.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\opnlllm.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\qomkjkk.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wvussqp.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\xxyxyvv.dll
    C:\windows\.protected
    C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\.protected
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.protected
    C:\Documents and Settings\[Current User Account]\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\.protected

In the above line replace the [Current User Account] text with the actual user account name you are logged into.

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

My ewido is the free version.

I ran hijackthis but two weren't removed:

    04 - Startup: .protected
    04 - Global Startup: .protected

Hijackthis suggested ending it in task manager, but i can't see them in the processes running at the time, I've attached a text file of the list on my task manager.

    thanks

Please complete the instructions in my previous message. I don't need a process list from Task Manager. They are not useful. In addition HijackThis logs already show a full process list with more info than Task Manager. HijackThis also has it's own Process Manager (in Misc Tools) which can be used to display more info and to kill more things than Task Manager is capable of doing.

Did you find the file I asked you to delete? Especially these:
    C:\windows\.protected
    C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\.protected
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.protected
    C:\Documents and Settings\[Current User Account]\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\.protected

    Did you get them deleted?

Also please follow the directions in the below and attach the log from Ewido (obviously skip the installation step since you already have it, but make sure you get any updates).

    Running Ewido Anti-Malware

Okay! Those two O4 line with .protected are now gone. They were still in your previous log!

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:
