    Hi guys. Hopefully you can help me (again)! I cannot get rid of a virus that has infected my PC (win XP - sp2). I have read similair threads but cannot find my problem. I have completed the stated procedure and can attach the logs requested. My problem :- if i try to open any of my applications it says "windows cannot access specified device. you may not have appropriate permissions." ; similarily i couldn't run hijackthis until i downloaded it again (i just checked and it won't run again) ; i get "page cannot be displayed" for every web address containing microsoft and some other security sites; it took 10.5 hours to run malwarebytes the first time for 170,000 files - 8 hours the 2nd time; i renamed the folder eexsuale in C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data to eexsualex as it contains a hidden file mkpffauu.exe and could not be deleted. On reboot it has reappeared again; my web Favorites don't do anything; cannot boot into any mode except Normal. I couldn't run RootRepeal it hung the PC. I couldn't read howtousecombofix but run it anyway. I cannot find MB log - does CCcleaner remove it? i can run it again if needed although there were 0 infections found!

    I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

    Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    See how you get on with this fix below.

    AVG Free 8.5 <--- You are using a very outdated copy of AVG. This is quite possibly the reason you came to be hit by malware. After we are done, my final steps will include a link to How to protect yourself from malware. There is a nice list to choose from of different anti-virus.

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7
    <--- This is outdated too, so uninstall it.

    The log(s) for MalwareBytes will be stored here: C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs

    Now we need to use ComboFix by sUBs

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    C:\windows\system32\icsxml
    C:\windows\system32\inetsrv

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\eexsuale
    c:\documents and settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\eexsualex
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\RegSERVO

    File::
    c:\windows\SETD1.tmp
    c:\windows\SETC5.tmp
    c:\windows\SETC2.tmp
    c:\windows\system32\lspgvq.dll
    c:\documents and settings\Edge\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\mkpffauu.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\abqbaolh.log
    C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\cwhumqpk.log
    C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\giakoami.log
    C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\isfkclvp.log
    C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\jlsvuygn.log
    C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\lacsryxg.log
    C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\nlpwgyat.log
    C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\ocwkcyhq.log
    C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\pymavuij.log
    C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\sukriuql.log

    Registry::
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "MkpFfauu"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon]
    "Userinit"="c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,"
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Please download Winsock 1.2

    http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h479/MysticalMagpie/winsockXP.png

    Use it to try and fix the broken internet connection.

    Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    AVG - I had been keeping it uptodate every week until last week when the virus struck. It then became corrupted. I cannot open it to disable it for scans.

    J2SE - could not remove - installer does not have priviledges.

    ComboFix/CFscript ran ok - it took over 30mins

    downloaded and ran Winsock ok.

    Java - Could not open download webpage.

    logs attached.

    "let me know how things are running now!" - same as before.

    This is the most up to date version of AVG Free. As I said, yours is now outdated, at 8.5. You're leaving yourself wide open by not keeping up to date.

    We can include to remove it later on, and then you can put some fresh antivirus on, but we need to remove this malware first.

    Download and run OTM.

    Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    Code:
    :reg
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "MkpFfauu"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon]
    "Userinit"="c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,"

    :files
    c:\documents and settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\eexsuale
    c:\windows\SETD1.tmp
    c:\windows\SETC5.tmp
    c:\windows\SETC2.tmp
    c:\documents and settings\Edge\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\mkpffauu.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Local Settings\temp\epkahctbfimbwcui.exe
    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2782/4174320048_f01c448b32_o.png button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into notepad, save it as something appropriate and attach it into your next reply.

    NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

    Download OTL to your desktop.

    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • Vista and Windows 7 users Right-click OTL and choose Run as Administrator)
    • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
    • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

    When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

    Attach both of these logs into your next reply.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    I thought by running updates every week i was keeping AVG uptodate but I realise now that 8.5 is an old version and should have been replaced. I will read any advice you supply re AV software.

    I ran OTM and OTL ok. MG Getlogs.bat keeps closing near the end and does not create a MGlogs.zip file. I tried twice so I have zipped all the txt files created in MGTools during the time it was processing.

    We need to run an OTL Fix

    • Right-click OTL.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
    • Copy and Paste the following code into the Image textbox. Do not include the word Code
    Code:
    Code:
    :otl
    O4 - HKCU..\Run: [MkpFfauu] C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\eexsuale\mkpffauu.exe File not found
    O20 - HKLM Winlogon: UserInit - (C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\eexsuale\mkpffauu.exe) -C:\Documents and Settings\Edge\Local Settings\Application Data\eexsuale\mkpffauu.exe File not found

    "Userinit"="c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,"

    :commands
    [EMPTYTEMP]
    [RESETHOSTS]
    [REBOOT]
    • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
    • Click Image.
    • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot. ATTACH that report in your next reply.

    Now run OTL again as per the instructions I gave you in post number 6.

    Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple is merely informational.

    • cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
    • nwktst<-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    • GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    • ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    • analyse <-- this attempts to run HijackThis. Be sure to click the Accept button twice in the license agreement popup or it will just sit there and wait.
    Now look for the C:\MGlogs.zip file and attach it no matter what happened while doing the above.

    What is inside of this folder? Let me know.

    Yes I know the feeling. I am not entirely positive but I suspect you could have a Ramnet infection.

    Try this please.

    Download this file to your desktop

    Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool

    Run the program you have just downloaded to your desktop (it will be randomly named )

    First we will run a virus scan.
    • On the first tab select all elements down to Computer and then select start scan.
    • Once it has finished select report, save and attach that.

    Do not close AVPTool or it will self uninstall, if it does uninstall - then just rerun the setup file on your desktop.

    Now an analysis scan

    • Select the Manual Disinfection tab
    • Press the Gather System Information button
    • Once done , still on the Manual Disinfection tab click the little icon of a file which is the "reports" button. Now click on Manual Disinfection report.You should see an option to save a report here with a little button with an icon of a disk. Attach this log please.

    I couldn't download Kaspersky from here or 5 other sites. I eventually did get a download but it said the database was outofdate but I could not download the update. I ran the version installed. It highlighted Trojan.Win32.Patched.md in 51 files which I had to disinfect. As soon as it finished it said Report has changed do you wish to save but before i could click yes it rebooted and the report is gone when i had to reinstall from desktop.

    The second report run ok.

    I noticed a lot of my programs had the infection when disinfecting. I am going to uninstall most of them because they are rarely used and i can always reinstall if needed.

    The virus is still present because i still keep getting the ie message cannot contect to microsoft feeds sync.

    If you used Internet Explorer to try the ESET online scan please try Firefox instead (and vice versa) Note: Your version of Firefox is VERY outdated. Let me know how you get on.

    Scan With RKUnHooker

    • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
    • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
    • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
    • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth, Files, Code Hooks. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
    • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
    • * This can take a while. Please be patient *.
    • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
    • Copy the entire contents of this log in you're next reply.
    • This log can be lengthy you may have to post it in separate replies.
    • Note: You may get the following warning - it is ok - just ignore it:
    • "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
      [*] It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

    Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Still cannot run ESET scan.

    Could not download RKUnhookerLE (tried other sites)

    was able to download and run Avenger but did this need RK to be run before it?

    getlogs.bat crashed again, i zipped new txt files.

    Yes but did you try with Internet Explorer yet?? Let me know. If this does not work then the news I have is not good I'm afraid as this is a Ramnit infection from what I can gather. ESET scanner is very good at catching Ramnet, most times we have to advise people to reformat however there have been a few cases where ESET has helped save the day where Ramnit was not too deeply embedded.

    cannot run ESET with either IE or Firefox.

    I have my data backed up to external hard drive. Is it safe or will it reinfect if I restore. It is data only (wav, jpg etc) no programs. How do I check it before copying back?

    This infection has really become quite nasty and dangerous. Recently it has become even more troublesome to remove. It is really safer to just bite the bullet and do a clean reinstall.

    The problem is that the damage caused by this infection really makes a PC unreliable/untrustworthy. PE file infectors like Ramnit, Virut,.... etc are can infect all executable files (DLL, EXE, SCR....and many more and also HTML). These infections can open back doors that truly may compromise your computer and your security. These backdoors, could allow a remote attacker to access and instruct the infected computer to download and execute more malicious files.

    In many cases the infected files (which could number in the thousands) cannot be disinfected properly by your anti-virus or by other scanning tools. Also when disinfection is attempted, the files often become corrupted and the system may become unstable or irrepairable. The longer Ramnit.A remains on a computer, the more files it infects and corrupts so the degree of infection can vary.

    Ramnit is commonly spread via a flash drive (usb, pen, thumb, jump) infection where it copies Worm:Win32/Ramnit.A with a random file name. The infection is often contracted by visiting remote, crack and keygen sites. These type of sites are a major source of system infection.

    Thanks. I will do a clean reinstall. I think the virus infected thru an email from a friend who's account had been compromised and bogus emails sent to all contacts!

    Can you post some links/recommendations for AV software.
