    ..hi there...~s~...

...i read the thread 'read & run me first' and i can't get past step 1...

....i have spybot s&d installed on my puter and it's detected Smitfraud-C. & Virtumonde among other nasties....1 or both of these is preventing me from doing the msconfig for normal startup mode...i need to reboot after i config that and when i do, of course it takes me back to before i configged.....

...what do you recommend?...running the procedures in safe mode?...or?....

..my system is windows xp...i recently downloaded avast as my new virus scanner...before i was running avg....that's been removed already....

...i'm in the process now of downloading the other tools required in the XP cleaning process....

    ...thank you for your time....:)

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Just continue on. Use the notes in the below to help you.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

...i was able to do the scannings in normal mode....

...whew...ok so i ran the scans for xp...following everything by the instructions including step 4 with the registry scan....

...i believe the scan took care of the majority of my problems but there is 1 that's showing up on my spybot scan still.....

    NNC.MGRS

..and while i was watching the scanning going on, i noticed that Smitfraud-C. and Virtumonde still show as in my files kind of but they don't show up as a threat...should i be concerned with that at all?.....

    ...i'm attaching my scans below....thanks....~s~...

    ..hi again....

...i just need to add a few more lil details that's been happening....

...when replying to anything whether it be emails or here, the letters show up long after i've typed them...it's like they're paused or something.?....and my pages do the same....i'm running with firefox....it shows a lil moving circle when the page is loading and you can see that it stalls....like it's thinking about it....

..in addition, anything that i have open, not browser wise, it takes a long time for it to pop up when i click on it...

...and then more importantly, when i ran the combofix, it stated to disable my av which i did but now i can't get it back up and running....do i need to do another install?...

...any changes i make to my puter too, they fall back as they were after i reboot.?....is that because of the system restore that i did?....~aughs~...

..thanks for your time and all your help!...:)

You should have read the sticky threads in the forum. Namely this one Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!! It could have save you several additional days of waiting time. When you posted message # 6 it already cost you almost one day. And this last message cost you another 2. It does not matter if it is intentional or not it still causes a bump and the effect is the same. :(

I'm looking at your logs now. How are things currently working?

    :confused

...hello again...gosh i hate to keep piling stuff up here but, my puter wont' allow cookies and i've no idea how to remedy this...

...my browser is firefox but i have tried with ie as well and nothing...i checked to make sure that the cookies are enabled and they are yet i keep getting the same message....you must enable cookies...~shrugs softly and peeks to you~...any ideas?....

    ...have a super hump day....:)

..omgosh i so didn't know that...i'm super sorry!....

...um, things are still the same...i get slow posting when typing any messages...it's as if i'm in slow motion....the viruses don't show up on spybot as being a threat when i scan anymore but they're there in my logs...should i be concerned about that?....

..and i have a NNC.MGRS that shows up on spybot each time i scan..i remove and it states that it's gone but, it's there the next time i scan...

...i'm super sorry about replying..i'll just wait to hear back from you..thank you!....~aughs and slips out~...

I don't know what your problem is with Cookies. Make sure that you are not blocking them in your firewall or with any other software. Make sure your Privacy Settings in your browser are not set incorrectly.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    O23 - Service: SymWMI Service (SymWSC) - Unknown owner - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
If Spybot is still detecting something now, you will need to attach a log from Spybot so I can see exactly what they believe they are finding.

...thanks so much for getting back to me...well everything worked without a hitch..~smiles warmly~..thanks again....i'm attaching the logs here as you had said to....

...the registry was successful as well...yahooey..~g~......

...i ran spybot after and NNC.MGRS trojan is still showing...i'm sending that full log with this as well....

This is not a problem. It is just showing that for the user account named Compaq_Owner that you have the start page set to about:blank. Did you tell Spybot to fix this? According to the log you did not. If you did fix it and it still shows this entry then I'm not sure why Spybot is not fixing it. It is not malware, it is just a user registry setting.

If it bothers you then you should be able to change this just by logging into the Compaq_Owner account and running IE. The set your start page to www.google.com or similar. Or alternatively, you can use the below to do the same.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixSP.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

..wow that's a huge relief..thanks...~scratching my head~..and yes i did click to have spybot fix it and it always comes up that it was successful but after rebooting, i'll run spybot again and low and behold, it shows up...ok...i'll do the regedit and let you know...thanks...~s~....

...and it said it was successful....so i'll run spybot again tomorrow after i reboot my puter tonight.....if it shows again, i'm not to worry about it?.....

...thank you for all you help on this!...i super appreciate it....~warm smile~...

Correct. You could even have a setting in your protection software that is locking it or restoring it. But either way it is not an issue.

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
