Hey guys and gals, I have a problem with my mom's laptop, it's a Dell XPS M170.

Okay so my mommy's gonna send me to the streets if I don't get this fixed.

So I accidentally contracted a smitfraud virus along with some other malware while using my ma dukes's computer. I cleaned it up and stuff, or so I thought I did. Is there any possible way that traces of malware are left on my mom's computer and are blocking my internet? Or some type of change in the registry that may be affecting the internet from being utilized by the system?

My wireless link says I'm connected to the internet, I have an "excellent" signal, 130 mbps, packets are being sent and received, but I just CAN'T get the internet to work. Now, you might just say, okay, let's start by using the ethernet connection (that's my first instinct) but THAT doesn't even work. It shows that I'm connected, the same deal, but AIM doesn't work, Firefox doesn't work, and IE doesn't work.

Note that ALL other computers using the wireless network, are working perfectly fine. (I tend to take better care of my computers heh). And I've used multiple wireless routers, and I'm able to connect, but the internet just isn't... THERE! lol. I don't know exactly how to explain it. But yeah, that's my problem.

Thanks a lot for your thoughts or ideas on how to fix this, I really appreciate it! :wave

P.S. If you guys could kinda hurry with responses, that would be AWESOME. My mommy's gonna beat me if I don't get this fixed soon! ;)

P.P.S. This is the link to my original post on the networking forums, when I was directed to here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=174689
There's additional information about my router there if that's needed.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

First we cannot be sure that you are really free of malware unless you run our cleaning procedure which I will post further down. Two things you could try to do for your connection problem.
    1. see if you can use System Restore to return to a point before the problem began.
    2. If # 1 does not help, try this: Fixing Wireless Zero Config Service
Now below is our cleaning procedure.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
