Hi everyone, about a week ago i had the win antivirus 2012 virus pop up on my screen and in the midst of removing it i found with the spybot program that there was smitfraud.c generic present. I have used multiple programs in safemode like malewarebytes, superantispyware, and mcafee but they all dont seem to be working because smitfraud just reappears even after the program says it was removed. I also tried smitfraudfix, but everytime i run a search with it the window closes and nothing happens. If anyone could help me with this problem i would really appreciate it.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Typcially this is just a nusiance registry key that the ineffectiveness of Spybot cannot remove and it just needs to be remove manually. However we cannot help you without knowing exactly what you are talking about. Attach the log from Spybot so we can see what is found.

You have more problems than what Spybot is showing. You need to do the below. Take note of the words "attach your logs" so that you don't do what you did with that very long Spybot log again. That was an inline log not an attachment.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Alright here are the logs sorry about the wrong attachment in the last post. I had to run all of the programs in safe mode with networking because when I ran in normal mode I would get a blue screen saying the harddrive had memory loss and restarted the computer. Since I ran the scan I can now run in normal mode and it doesn't seem like anything is wrong from what i can see but I have the gadget that shows CPU usage and it seems like it was using alot of CPU when i wasnt running anything. It may not be anything but it seemed different than how my computer normally ran. I havent run any scans after what the removal instructions said because I wasnt sure if that would mess anything up if there was still something you still needed. Thank you for your time and I hope the logs are correctly posted.

You forgot to attach the requested log from Malwarebytes. Please attach the below to logs:
    Code:
    2,034 2012-01-06 01:12:15 C:\Users\Chris\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-2012-01-05 (20-12-09).txt
    3,080 2012-01-08 23:33:43 C:\Users\Chris\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-2012-01-08 (18-28-46).txt

You still are infected. The "C:\Windows\svchost.exe" file is still present.
    • Are you missing any desktop icons ?
    • Are things missing from the Start menu or All Programs menu?
    • Are things missing from Quick Launch?
    Delete the below files:
    • C:\Users\Chris\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\7b31qk8u02e336
    • C:\Users\Chris\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\bh05qr754mw8ng18mw6suf22f6yt4830k3dn61f0877o4
    • C:\ProgramData\7b31qk8u02e336
    • C:\ProgramData\bh05qr754mw8ng18mw6suf22f6yt4830k3dn61f0877o4
Now goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
    • Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller
Now please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )
Also can you rerun ComboFix from Normal boot mode and if it runs attach a new log.

I need a new log from MGtools obtained from Normal boot mode now too.

Please re-run TDSSkiller and if the below still show then delete them

    15:24:49.0830 7340 \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - skipped by user
    15:24:49.0830 7340 \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - User select action: Skip

    Let me know the results.

Please download and save the below tool from Grinler @ bleepingcomputer to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Now run it. Now see if you can find the items that seemed to be missing ( like shortcuts, Start Programs... etc )?

Also tell me how things are working?

Here is the updated TDSSkiller log. I ran the unhide.exe program and all of my shortcuts from before are there but when i open the start menu there are still no items in the list. I can run the internet fine but thats about all that I have run so far. I also noticed that there are still about 13 processes of svchost.exe in the task manager. Does that mean I could still be infected? Thank you very much for all your help you have been great.

It is quite normal to have many svchost.exe processes running. As long as they running from the correct location, it is not a problem. Apparently you had run ComboFix before you came here because there are things showing in its quarantine that were not removed when you ran it on our request.

Now we need to use ComboFix to DeQuarantine some files that it should not have removed.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named C:\DeQuarantine_log.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
No rerun the unhide program and let me know if you have recovered any missing items from the Start Menu
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\DeQuarantine_log.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Here are the logs you asked for. I actually booted up my computer and there were programs in the start up menu but I went ahead and followed the instructions you said. As far as I can see there doesnt seem to be any issues now unless you see something in the updated logs. I was wondering if there is nothing you see wrong in the logs how to go about putting all of the settings back to where it was originally and if theres any special way to uninstall these programs. Thank you for your help you have been the best.

We will address this when we get to final instructions. I just want to run one more scan with an updated version of MGtools first.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

    All clean!

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Alright thank you so much you have been a huge help! I followed all of the step you said and everything seems to be working fine.
