Something blocking updates

I am running Windows XP. First I noticed I couldn't get updates for Malwarebytes. Then McAfee won't update, Adobe Reader couldn't get an update, and Windows Media Player won't open. When I boot up there is a message that Windows cannot find Jusched.exe. I was getting a message "Xtray.exe - Entry Point Not Found", but I think that has stopped. Not sure what I did that ended that one.

I tried to reinstall SuperAntiSpyware and the installer tells me it has to uninstall the old version. Then it can't find the file it needs to do the uninstall. I had a similar problem with Adobe Reader when I tried to update that. Instead of updating I got the message it needed a file on a network resource that it couldn't find. I couldn't find the file it was looking for either. Finally I downloaded Adobe Reader and reinstalled it. It works again.

I've tried a solution from the Malwarebytes forum of trying a Proxy Server to get around any virus blocking that program, but I couldn't get it to work. I've run Malwarebytes and McAfee full scans without the latest updates and they didn't find anything.

When the computer boots up it is really slow. Always has been pretty slow anyway. Tried booting to safe mode with no success. Very time consuming because it is slow. I thought that maybe I could use "The Ultimate Trouble Shooter" to boot to safe mode, but it won't run either.

I have everything up to date using Secunia and Windows does all the updates.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this aother user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

I have gone through the list to get my pc ready and clean. Here are my results.

When trying to install SuperAntiSpyware I still get the message that says there is a previous version of SuperAntiSpyware on the computer and it will have to uninstall it. Then in a Windows Installer box "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package. So I can't get that program installed.

The update for Malwarebytes is being blocked. But I have run Malwarebytes in a full scan and quick scan and nothing was found. The log for the last quick scan is attached.

When I download ComboFix to my Desktop it disappears after downloading. Trying to download several times to different locations and it won't download.

Tried to run RootRepeal. Select the Files Tab, select Scan and nothing happens. Click on Save Report and it said it could not create file. The other tabs will scan and list items.

I did run MGtools successfully. Log is attached. All the problems are still here. Another thing that doesn't work is Search for files and folders. It opens, but there is no input box or text showing. Just the helper dog.

    TIA

    Jim

I am not seeing any malware in your logs. This folder needs to be cleaned out:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jim Allen.JIM\Local Settings\Temp\

CCleaner should remove most of it and you can manually remove the rest. This looks like a software issue.
I see Combo on your desktop, but it is an empty folder.

What happens if you download Combo to a different computer and try to transfer it via cd or dvd?

I downloaded ComboFix to another computer. The problem must have been I didn't have my virus software off and it didn't warn me it was deleting the file after it downloaded like the other computer did warn me. I thought I had it off at that time. Guess not. Anyway the log is attached.

There are three files in the: C:\Documents and Settings\Jim Allen.JIM\Local Settings\Temp\ folder that won't delete. They are:

    etilqs_JVw86Bj4q9KQhFTQmWIR
    etilqs_x7O2hieSRXogEKVUjfGP
    etilqs_7Bdcx4zaOmz5SxIkCSdm

I had run CCleaner a few days ago and they must have stopped it from cleaning out that folder. They still won't go away.

I should say were. They are gone now and there is another file that has a similar name. etilqs_Tl12sIuwaWlKSF3iBXE2 Do you have any idea what makes them? It shows a size of 0kb. Type is just File. It's probably Google Chrome making them. The time on the file is one minute ago.

Windows Media player opened, so that appears to be fixed now. The Search for files and folders window looks normal, and IE worked like it was new again.

Thanks for the good news and all the help.

    Jim

Those files are nothing to worry about. IIRC, they are from your Instant Messenger program.

I am not seeing any issues in the Combo log. I would say you are good to go.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
