Strange Activity in XP... Very weird.

    Greetings,

I have been lurking in the darkness around this site for a while. It seems to be a good one!

Unfortunatly, I need help. I am currently performing the steps in the READ ME FIRST sticky but I wanted to get the ball rolling on my issue. Perhaps someone could point me in the right direction.

    Here are my symptoms:

3-5min after a search in google with Firefox (I don't know about IE), a new tab will open with some random address with my last search. I will start logging each one as it comes in and add it below this point. Please note this does NOT happen every time. There seems to be no rhyme or reason behind it.

Here's a weird one. My task bar will turn into the beige windows 98 task bar. Sometimes all of it, sometimes part of it, sometimes just the start button, sometimes just the outline.

At the same time as the task bar changing, my sound doesn't work. There are no devices listed. Video works fine.

System is pretty slow considering the stats and what I am running.

Anyways, there is the ones I can remember off hand. I'm sure I will be updating this post as time goes on.

    My system is as follows:

    Motherboard: Intel Pentium 4 640, 3200 MHz, Sorento D945GNT
    Chipset: Intel Lakeport-G i945G
Audio adaptor: Intel 82801GB ICH7 - High Definition Audio Controller [A-1]
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz

Any help would be a big help, including what next steps to take.

    Much thanks in advance,
    Shandley

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.
