When running big programs such as games or running antivirus and spyware scans the system cache will max out where the system becomes lagged and a restart is needed. All windows security updates are installed. No viruses detected but full scan closes before finished in Avast where I can only complete full scan during scheduled boot scan. HouseCall will complete quick scan but full scan closes before finished. Spyware Terminator will complete full scan but then it is time to restart computer since cache is maxed out. No registry errors detected with Ccleaner 2.29.1111. How to fix?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Here's my current progress, paused during step3 due to Avast issue listed below.

    -Uninstalled Trend Micro HouseCall
    -Only windows Firewall installed.
    -Viewpoint Media Player uninstalled.
    -Only Java 6.18 installed.

Deleted 3 files from Avast virus chest:
    kernel32.dll
    winsock.dll
    wsock32.dll

Files appeared in chest again after restart. How do I keep them out of the chest? Btw, could the system cache leak be caused by the kernel or other drivers being in the chest?

Please complete all of the instructions I gave to you. The files Avast is complaining about are system files. Whether they are really infected or not remains to be seen.

MGtools would not run the three batch files. No errors were listed where I could use a given solve. Here are the other logs. The cache problem remains.

Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple is merely informational.

cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

Not sure what you mean by this. If you are referring to Virtual Memory, this is not a problem for the malware forum.

The logs you have attached thus far do not indicate any malware problems. When we get logs from the MGtools scans, we may also see that it is not showing any malware.

I'm referring to the system cache in physical memory as listed in the pic below. The system cache amount listed in the task manager will leak during big program use such as AV program scans until it surpasses the available amount listed around 2500000 and will max out at around 2700000, then the computer is useless and needs a restart.

I only found errors in runkeys.txt:
Error: Value: "AppInit_DLLs" does not exist!
Error: Value: "PendingFileRenameOperations" does not exist!
Error: Key: regfile\shell\merge\command does not exist!

This is not likely to be a malware problem especially since your logs are all clean. You should post in the Software Form. My guess is that you changed the Performance settings to allow System Cache to use all available memory.

    Open Control Panel -> System-Applet -> Advanced-Tab -> Performance-Settings-Button -> Advanced

And then check to see what option you have selected un Memory usage.

Both options in that tab are set to performance though. I also have the page file set to custom size of 4600mb yet the task manager shows the computer is using 7500mb instead which confuses me. Any other ideas?

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Both options set to performance of what? There are two selections in each area.

I believe you are misinterpreting the info. The Commit Charge info showing 7500M is just a total of your Virtual Memory and Total Physical Memory. Since you have 3 GB of real memory and say you set your virtual memory to 4600M, 7500 M is about the correct number you should see at the bottom of the Task Manager window which is what yours shows. A simple explanation of this can been seen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commit_charge

You should post in the Software Forum. This is not a malware forum topic.

    M332 Guest

My apologies, I meant both selections were set to programs but I mistakenly posted the word performance.

Thanks for explaining the commit charge. That's perfectly clear to me now.

I believed it may have been a malware issue originally which is why I posted here. Ok I'll post in the software forum now since that has been ruled out. My sincere thanks for your help. I'm very grateful.

    You're welcome.

I would like to see a complete log from MGtools before I give you final cleanup instructions. So please do the below.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Ok here is the zip file.

These logs are clean too, but you should consider removing those items you put in the Trusted Zone. We don't recommend putting anything in the TZ unless absolutely necessary and it is rarely necessary. I have never once needed anything in the TZ.

You may also want to test what happens by uninstalling Spyware Terminator. Other than that, if you still have an issue, post in the Software Forum.

Since you are not having malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks I will remove the TZ entries.

I suspected that so I removed Avast and Spyware Terminator a month or so back yet the problem remained so I reinstalled them.

    I appreciate all your help.

I was just searching thru your logs again in even more detail and a file has triggered my curiosity. Do you see the below file?

    C:\windows\uccspecb.sys

It is showing as a hidden file and drivers do not belong in the Windows root folder. Can you get properties info on this file?

  18. M332

    M332 Guest

Says it was created on May 26 2007, it's 4kb in size, and it has no info listed in the summary. I googled it and it's one of the malware files installed from a browser addon called CouponBar. I do not remember couponbar ever being installed and it is not installed now so I deleted that file.

About the TZ entries, I deleted them. There are tons more of Restricted Zone sites than there were TZ sites however. Is there a file that contains that list that I could open to delete all the listed sites instead of having to delete one by one in the RZ listing?

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

    Any change after a reboot?

The RZ should be extremely large. These are entries put in place by programs like Spybot, SpywareBlaster, and many others to protect you from bad sites. You don't need to worry about these.

  20. M332

    M332 Guest

No it doesn't appear that there was any change after reboot. The cache leak remains.

Ok I will leave the RZ sites alone thanks.

You're welcome. Hopefully you can find a solution in the Software Forum. You need to post something that actually illustrates the problem though. i.e., Logs/snapshots from when you are having the problem.

  22. M332

    M332 Guest

Ok will do. What logs do you suggest? I probably can't post a hijackthis log or else I'll get the thread shut down and moved back here by a mod.

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Would not be of any use at all.

A snapshot of Task Manager's running processes and also of the Performance screen would potentially be useful and point out what you think is a problem on the screens. Also snapshot your Performance Options and Virtual Memory screens settings from My Computer so people know how you have things setup.

Also a significantly better tool than Task Manager could be used to show processes. One that even allows creating a full log like Process Explorer

I would suggest coniguring it to show additional info like below and get a log after selecting any process that seems to be using a lot of memory or a lot of CPU time. The example below select explorer.exe but you could select any process. Give it a try before you need it so you understand how it works. ;)
    • configure some options:
      • Click View and select Show Lower Pane. And where it says "Lower Pane View" make sure DLL's is checked.
      • Now click on explorer.exe.
      • Now also under the View menu choose "Select columns" and put a check mark on "Image Path".
    • Now click on File and then Save As. And save the process list.
    • Post it back here as an attachment.

Sounds like a great program. I'm glad you recommended it. Looking forward to having it. I'll have to wait to download PE until late today. Just to confirm from the info you posted, do you want me to save the process list and attach it here?

I'm guessing the info you posted was pasted from the standard instructions you use with people here, and you also suggested I start a thread about this in the software forum which I did, so if that was a unwanted paste involving the final attachment instruction and you would rather I post the attachment there instead of here then I will. If that was no paste error though and you do really want to see it then I'd be glad to post it here for you. It would be sometime later tonight probably.
