Hi, I think this has happened due to a virus contained in a software programme downloaded from a torrent site. As I clicked on 'setup' to test the software I started getting lots of warnings from my avg programme. AVG then refused to work so I downloaded a newer trial version and took off the old, the new version isn't picking up anything either.

Now when I start the PC I have a new desktop pic in red and black, warning me that 'my privacy is in danger' If I click on the start button most of my items have gone missing... I have no 'run' 'search' 'computer' contol panel' 'documents' or anything left of any use! I get windows warnings up saying things like: Windows cannot find "C:\Documents'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. .....etc'

I can no longer get on the net and when I try it takes me to a page called 'Virus remover 2008' which says that it has detected N-case.win32, Cool web search and numerous other items and asks me to install their software to remove (Which I've not done)

I have tried to follow the lists of 'To Do's' that are on your site before making a posting but my pc will not load any software at all. I have downloaded on my laptop and tried to install to the infected desktop but it wont auto run and there is no longer a 'run' or computer' button in start so theres no way of installing the software.

I can still get into 'safemode' and everything is still showing there but dont think that I can sort anything from there.

I am at a total loss now, my daughters are worried sick because they both have a lot of photos etc stored on the pc.

Please can anyone help??? :cry :cry :cry

Since posting I have loaded CCleaner in 'safemode' run it in administrater then tried to run it in the other a/c 'User' however, even in safemode while on the user a/c I have no way of running the software. In the start menu I only have listed:

    Internet Explorer
    Outlook express
    Paint
    Microsoft Word
    Dynomite (Game)
    Calculator
    Windows Live Messenger
    Microsoft Works
    Set Programme Access and Defaults
    and Printers and Faxes

All other programmes like , computer and run etc are missing

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You don't need to run things from the Start Menu. You can navigate to them in Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, or Task Manager to run them.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run theREAD & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

I have now managed to run the scans and have attatched the logs. My pc is working much better now but still has some problems.

I am still getting the 'Windows warning messages' on start up:
    Windows
    cannot find C:\Documents'. ......
    cannot find 'and' ........
    cannot find 'Settings\User|Application' ......
    cannot find 'Data\Adobe\Manager.exe" ' ........
    (Desktop) Windows
could not load or run "C:\Documents' .............
could not load or run 'and'...........
could not load or run 'Settings\User\Application'........
could not load or run 'Data\Adobe\Manager.exe" ' ........

Also my desktop picture is that of one of the inside of a folder, and although I can change it in 'Display' it makes no difference to the desktop picture showing, and 'right-click' doesn't work when used on the desktop.

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me roughly how long it takes for a reply after the logs have been posted, I know you guys are really busy but does it normally take long to go through them? Only my 2 daughters are pestering the life out of me to get back on the pc

Just read the sticky threads. See this one: Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!! Whether it is intentional or not, it is still a bump and this message cost you at a minimum 16 hrs more delay.

Please delete the below since this is not where we asked you to save MGtools.exe to:
    C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\MGtools.exe

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
