Hello, I've tried to figure out my problem from reading other posts here, but I can't. The problem is much like others apparently; in firefox 3.5.6 I have tabs opening by themselves and links from pages like a google search do redirects. All these unwanted tabs are advertising websites I don't want. I'm not very computer savvy so please be patient with me if I don't understand what you may say for me to do and have to ask for an explanation. Thanks in advance. I'm not even sure how to know when or how to get my first reply in this forum. I assume I just check back later to look for replies and that you won't in fact email me? Guess I'll find out.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

First please run TDSSKiller per the below steps:
    • Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt -v

    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please attach this log to your next reply (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post ) .
If you still have any malware problems after doing the above, you will have to continue on with the below full cleaning procedure.
    ======================================================

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Thank you chaslang for responding. This morning I was looking through some of the other postings that were similar. I saw where you had someone else load and run TDSSKiller and figured I'd download it and try it as a meantime measure. It found 2 errors and fixed them. I've been using the PC almost all day since then and no more tabs opening on their own and no more redirected links. I'm therefore assuming my problem is taken care of and I'll be fine. Thanks to all you folks for your time and efforts in helping us less knowledgeable types. Have a merry Christmas and a super New Year.

Thanks again chaslang. I already do almost all the things listed. I'll be checking out some of the other things listed too.
