Thank you very much - the advice on these forums appears to have got rid of a very annoying homepage hijacker problem. You guys are fantastic; Cyber Superheroes :)

I had a homepage hijacker associated with a file nvctrl.exe in my Windows/System32 folder. It was resetting my homepage to about:blank which in turn was opening up a very dodgy looking webpage offereing assistance to rid me of the spyware.

I had AVG anti-virus, Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D, but I have to admit I have not been vigilant in maintaining security. These systems could not rid me of the problem.

I followed the READ & RUN ME FIRST instructions up to step 7 to the letter (almost!) and I now seem to be rid of the problem hijacker. I could not install Microsoft Windows Defender as I do not appear to have a valid product key or something. Everything else was carried out.

I could not follow the Special Removal Procedures - far too complex for such a simple man like me!! Nothing I was looking at appeared to tally with the instructions.

After I ran the online Panda ActiveScan I noticed there were still further items of spyware resident that it would not shift without me upgrading to the premium Panda service. Is it worth the investment or are there other ways of further cleansing my system?

I am not sure if I have achieved a fully cleansed system. I have attached the logs from Bitdefender, Activescan (zipped), and HJT. I would really appreciate advice on how to fully cleanse my system and which of the impressive arsenal of electronic defences I now have are best to keep running to try to prevent further attacks.

    Thank you.

    Welcome to MGs!

But you need to follow one of the Special Removal procedures because you are still infected with one of the SmitFraud family of problems.

Run the below and attach the requested smitfiles.txt log:

SpywareStrike, Smitfraud, SpySheriff, SpyAxe & PSGuard Removal

Then also attach a new HJT log.

Thank you for the swift response.
Procedure followed as per your reply.

    • I ran smitrem (and my desktop is now blue just as it said), log attached.
    • Panda Activescan re-run and still spyware presnt. Log attached (zipped).
    • New HJT run, and log attached.

I still found the HJT procedure very confusing, and did not actually mark any entries for fixing. Nothing in there seemed to be like any of the entries indicated. Have I missed something?

    You're welcome.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm
    O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://software-dl.real.com/290c1608fa4854686d15/netzip/RdxIE601.cab

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete
    :
    C:\Documents and Settings\Christine\Local Settings\Temp\sa8.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Christine\Local Settings\Temp\saE.exe
    C:\Downloads\InternationalKartingSetup-dm[1].exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST)
    .

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    All above now done.
    New HJT log attached.

The homepage about:blank hijacker dissapeared after I initially carried out the READ & RUN ME FIRST procedure. Browser (IE6 - Firefox was never a problem) is staying where it is told and no popups. Browser would appear to be sharper on loading pages.

Do I appear to be Malware free or are there other scans needed to determine this?

Based on what tools you have run you are clean. You visible problems (the ones you were experiencing are gone. There are other tools we could run to dig deeper to look deeper. That's up to you if you would like to run them.

Would you like to run more scans?

Thanks for the great help so far.
I'm willing to stick it out and get this thing totally cleaned if you are OK to bare with me. I would very much appreciate your assistance.

I am running Spy Sweeper now, but as it looks like a long scan, and it is nearly 3:00 AM here, I shall be off to bed, and carry this on in the morning.
    Thanks again.

No problem! The scans can take a long time, especially when they are trying to be very thorough! Just attach the logs whenever you get finished with them.

Spysweeper and Ewido scans now completed - logs attached with new HJT log taken after.

Okay you are looking good. Spy Sweeper removed another baddie and some cookies and Ewido just found some cookies. I would uninstall Ewido & Spy Sweeper now to avoid the hogging of system resources. However, Spy Sweeper is a great tool. If you plan on buying it, keep it.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

I've switched off system restore, rebooted, then reset the system restore.

On step 1 of the Malware protection measures I've hit a snag - my copy of XP appears not to be legitimate and I am not permitted to run Microsoft Updates. Microsoft have kindly offered to supply a product registration key for only £92 (GBP)!!

Should I dig deep and splash out?

That's the only legal way to obtain your updates and to be able to install other products from Microsoft.
