This "Warning" has been popping up followed by boxes urging me to check them and take immediate action to protect my computer.

I have gone to the Microsoft and Windows sites and found no knowledge of these viruses, Windows Update say I am up to date.

    Who is doing this?

And what should I do about it?

    Thanks, Mishkyn

What is popping up is this:

    "Your Computer is infected"

    Name Type Threat level

    XF.Lugunay!dam Virus Medium
    Bloodhound.Exploit.324 Virus Medium
    Trojan.DownLoad.37236 Virus High
    Win32/Spy.Ursnif.A Virus High
    Trojan.Win32.Buzus.ebbn Virus Critical

Recommend: Click "Start Protection" button to erase all threats
    Start protection (Box to check)

Also says: Documents have 5 Viruses found

Hard drive C: has 5 Viruses found

There is something that resembles a Windows Badge,

then: Windows Security (in red) Security is affected by virus)

Blocks keep popping up urging me to download protection

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Re: This "Warning" popped up, I think it is a Scam

    Thanks,
I have done all those steps many times on past computers, I have now learned to keep up to date on all my malware protection and scans. In fact, I check AVG, Super Anti SpyWare and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and Windows update every time I turn on my computer.

I generally must update the first 3 nearly 3 or 4 times a day, Win less often.

I wrote this because I think it is something fake. I checked various sites and no one seems to know about the malware they describe.

My computer is wroking just fine and quickly.

Any other ideas what kind of joke this might be? I just wanted to warn others as I think it is a scam.

Well, I guess it is not a scam, but I cannot believe, with all my diligence, this has all ahppened.

What more can a girl do?

Well for starters you can attach logs. Regardless of whether you think its a joke, it is rogue software trying to scare you into clicking on it. Your computer may seem to be working just fine, but would you not rather check it out thoroughly and have me review the logs? :confused

    Dear Kestrel,
Yes, of course I want you to check my logs, I just meant what more could I do preventitively to protect myself. Checking up to dates 3 times day and daily scans have missed all of THAT? Kind of depressing.

Will be some time before I get to do the work, very ill mom in hosptial, Xmas season, but will do it eventually. And thanks. Mishkyn

Oh I beg your pardon, my bad.
Sorry to hear that. Hope she makes a rapid recovery!
You're most welcome. :) Attach logs when you are able to and I will review them for you.

    Kestrel,
That post was so sweet of you. I did not mean it as a scolding thing, just that I so appreciate this site and what you and the others do for us, that I would never not take your advice.

People can get truly upset and cranky when their computers are going bonkers, and all of you handle things with such patience and wisdom and compassion that I have a great deal of admiration for you, and I would just feel awful for you to be upset about anything I said.

You all are such genuine givers, and that is rare in this world, and I truly did not take your post as anything but your usual concern and great advice, so your apology was totally unnecessary but so very dear.
    Thanks again,
    Mishkyn

No worries Mishkyn, attach your logs when you are ready and if there's any bad there I'll find it. :)
