    Hello all,

    I was on MSN and was chatting to my son, a link appeared saying 'is this you?' which appeared to be from him. I clicked on the link and was taken to a myspace page. Scanning with AVG Free indicates my PC has been infected with 'Trojan Horse Adload_r.akh' but AVG will not remove it and Malwarebytes doesn't see it.

    I have followed all the steps as suggested, rescanned and it is still showing on AVG. Any suggestions and/or help would be gratefuly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Stan

    You need to tell me exactly what AVG is complaining about. The full path to the file.

    I see you have already run TDDSKiller and it fixed one issue, however your logs are still showing a problem with your MBR. Please download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...

    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:

    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message.

    Your MBR log was good. That is one down. But I don't like what AVG is reporting. Please do this:

    eSet Online Scan.

    If it shows infections, run it again. Do it until it shows no problems.

    Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Ran eSet and it picked up 2 things and removed them, log is attached. I ran it again and it was clear, I then ran MGLogs as requested and have attached the log.

    AVG scan was then run and it picked up a number of things, log attached.

    Thnaks for your help thus far.

    I think AVG is giving you false positives. However, I want you to run TDDSkiller again, but with this new version:

    Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!

    Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.

    • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
      Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
    • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
    • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
    • Click the Start Scan button.
    • Do not use the computer during the scan
    • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
    • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
    • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_14.17.05_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory ( usually Local Disk C ).
    • Attach this log to your next message

    As requested, I have run the TDSSKiller programme and it identified a threat, I have now ran the programme 6 times and it keeps detecting a threat despite 'cure' being selected and the PC reboooting. I have not ran it anymore as it doesn't appear to be removing the threat.

    I have attached all the logs.

    Thanks for your continued support

    Please re-run MBRCheck and attach the new log. I don't know why TDDSKiller is still reporting a bad MBR.

    Well, that indicates all is well with the MBR. So let's have you use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Program Files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe

    But don't do this until you have another browser installed like Firefox (I don't recall if you have that installed or not. )

    Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
    Download Mirror #1
    Download Mirror #2

    • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
    • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
      Code:
      :filefind
      svchost.exe

    • Click the Look button to start the scan.
    • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
    Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

    After a reboot, download and install IE8.

    Done as requested, log attached. AVG scan run afterwards still shows issues - log also attached.

    Did you delete as I asked you to the C:\Program Files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe?

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Program Files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe

    FCopy::
    C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\svchost.exe | C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    I did as requested in the previous instruction and deleted C:\Program Files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe after installing Firefox. I then followed the rest of the process you suggested including reinstalling IE8.

    I have scanned and attached the logs as requested.

    Thanks

    Are you keeping your disc emulation software disabled when you are running these scans?

    Is AVG still reporting the same infected files?

    Tim

    Unsure if I have disk emulation software installed, I have a vague recollection of checking this from one of your earlier posts but can't see it on the thread. I seem to remember the check showing I didn't have any installed.

    AVG is still showing issues, log attached.

    Thanks for your help thus far.

    This has got me a bit baffled. Your Firefox exe is now reported as infected. I would like to have some outside verification of this, so please let's do another online scan:
    Using BitDefender Online Scan.

    Tim

    I have run the scan as requested and BitDefender identified 5 issues. I tried to save as txt but my PC only gave me a html option, so I saved in that format then saved again as Txt so I could attach it. I'm not sure if it still has full functionality sorry.

    I re-ran BitDefender and it didn't find anything this time, but AVG still picks up issues - log attached.

    Sorry for the hassle, and thanks for the help!

    I found another thread that suggested Hitman Pro 3.5 would remove this Malware; I downloaded and ran it and it identified the same threat, 1 reboot later and it appears to have gone.

    I have re-run Hitman and it seems clear, it has also shown clear on AVG. Do you think this has cleared it?

    Thanks again

    If AVG is now giving you a clean scan, I would say that hitman did fix your issues.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    I don't appear to be having problems with other Malware so all is good. I have followed your final instructions to the letter ref: putting everything back as was.

    Once again, many thanks for your patience and forebearance!
