    Hi

    I have gone through the read and run me first to try and get rid of the nasties on a PC a friend has given me to try and fix. He tells me that his son got hold of his PC (of which is a works PC) and since then something has been hijacking his internet browser. Microsoft Security Essentials got rid of a lot of infected files that where infected with:

    virus VBS/Ramnit.B
    Worm Win32/Ramnit.A
    Virus Win32/Ramnit.E
    Virus Win32/Bamital.C
    Adware Win32/DoubleD
    Virus Win32/SillyFDC
    Trojan Downloader Java/OpenConnection.ES
    Exploit Java/CVE-2010-0094.P
    Exploit Java/CVE-2010-0094.O
    Exploit Java/CVE-2009-3867.HD
    Exploit Java/CVE-2008-5353.JJ
    Exploit Java/CVE-2008-5353.QZ
    PWS Win32/Zbot.gen!Y

    After I thought MSE had got rid of all of the above the internet browser is still being hijacked, once with something called youporn and a few times with uk.gomeo.co.uk. I am not 100% sure but since I went through your read and run me first these have now stopped (well I hope so).

    Problems now are that when I run SuperAntiSpyware I get a Trojan.SVCHost/Fake and Malware.Trace that it says it has fixed and to do a reboot. When I do another scan they are still there.

    The only thing I could not run from your read and run me first was the MGtools.exe. I ran this from the root of the C: drive as instructed and I get the following error:

    C:\MGtools.exe is not a valid win32 application.

    I have tried changing the name of this exe and also tried changing the extension to .com (I read on this forum) but it will not let me run.

    Please help thanks.

    Please run the Eset online scan. Once it is finished, if it finds things, run it again until it comes back clean. Then see if you can run the C:\MGTools.exe.

    eSet Online Scan.

    Hi TimW

    Thanks for the reply.
    I have run the eset scanner 3 times, the last scan being clean (I have posted logs).

    I have now been able to run the MGtools.exe and have posted zip file with logs in.

    It looks like from the eset scan that all or most of the nasties Microsoft Security Essentials got rid of have come back.

    In this situation I would normally do a format and reinstall but on this occasion cannot due to it being my clients works computer with all the software that comes with it (he does not want to give it back to his employers in this state so any help is well appreciated.

    Loads of thanks

    A lot of what was found was in your system restore folders. We will handle that when we do the final cleanup.

    Do you know what these are:
    C:\Program Files\sys1
    C:\Program Files\sys2
    C:\Program Files\sys4
    C:\Program Files\sys5

    Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\KSmith\Local Settings\temp\2.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\KSmith\Local Settings\temp\2.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\KSmith\Local Settings\temp\dwm.exe

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7}]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D}]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi TimW

    Thanks for the reply of which I have worked my way through. Things seem to working ok, I have done a bit of browsing on the internet and so far no hijacks. I did not really notice any other bad behaviour I only really knew about the infections by loading Microsoft Security Essentials and doing a scan and fix but it looked like most came back. Should I do another scan now?

    The folders you asked about:

    Do you know what these are:
    C:\Program Files\sys1
    C:\Program Files\sys2
    C:\Program Files\sys4
    C:\Program Files\sys5

    All are empty with show hidden files and folders enabled except for sys5 which has sol.exe in it of which I think is solitaire but I have not clicked on it to find out.

    The logs you asked for are attached, does it look like you have killed what you have found/wanted?

    Thanks a lot for your help.

    Since those are empty folders, I suggest we remove them. Let's do this and you should be good to go:>

    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\KSmith\Application Data\Oshoo
    c:\documents and settings\KSmith\Application Data\Sial
    c:\documents and settings\KSmith\Application Data\Amiry
    c:\documents and settings\KSmith\Application Data\Zexiyb
    c:\documents and settings\KSmith\Application Data\Iqzoog
    c:\documents and settings\KSmith\Application Data\Emob

    C:\Program Files\sys1
    C:\Program Files\sys2
    C:\Program Files\sys4
    C:\Program Files\sys5

    Hi TimW

    Sorry about the delay.

    The sys folders you were worried about are still there and are all empty.

    All seems to be running ok browsing the internet seems ok. I have not tried running any virus or malware scans of yet, should I try?

    Please find attached the logs you asked for.

    Thanks for all your help so far.

    We recommend you keep both SAS and MBAM.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
