Uh-oh...did I just give my credit card information to a malware program?

    Hello,

I was just messing around on my computer the other day when a pop-up appeared and told me I had viruses. I believed this because Norton is always picking up viruses on my computer. Now, this was not an ordinary pop-up; it was not the web browser kind that says "You are infected!" in big red letters and is obviously a scam.

This looked like it was from Microsoft and appeared extremely official, exactly like something Microsoft would do (although I don't think they often solicit people). So this official-looking pop-up tells me I can get my viruses removed if I upgrade my current Microsoft anti-virus program.

Stupidly, I decided to do this...I have been frustrated by my unending virus problems. So I enter my name, credit card info, billing address, etc. and sign up for a 6-month subscription to the program.

A little too late, I heard today that malware posing as Microsoft has been destroying people's computers. Not only am I now worried about the computer, I'm concerned because I entered my credit card information.

Unfortunately, I do not even remember the name of the program I downloaded or any additional information. I'm very sorry for my lack of specifics, this was very spur of the moment :(

Nothing terrible has happened yet, but I'm hoping to stop the problem (if there is one) before it starts. I'm not even sure it was a malware program, and I don't know how to find out.

If anybody has some advice to give, I will gladly listen. Thank you so much for any help!

    Alex

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Likely you have been scammed and the very first thing you should do is notify your credit card company and then cancel that credit card number.

Now please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

I notified the credit card company earlier today, thank you!

I can't get the RootRepeal to run all the way through for some reason, a transparent error message pops up after awhile, and I can't even read what went wrong!

I have attached the other logs to this message, let me know if there is anything else I need to provide and what I should do (if anything). Thanks again.

Even though it is better to e safe than sorry with your credit card info, based on your logs it looks like we may have jumped the gun. It appears that you installed Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) which is a valid program from Microsoft, however, I don't understand why you would have gotten a popup ( or from what program ) saying you are infected since Microsoft would not do this especially if it were not already installed. Perhaps all you did was sign up for a 6 month trial of MSE which would not have been a problem.

You also mentioned about Norton finding infections but I don't see Norton installed and you should not have more than one antivirus installed anyway.

Also I do not see any major malware in your logs (other than possibly the belw 3 file which you should delete) so again, I don't know why you had received a notice of an infection.

Let me know if you successfully get the above deleted.
