Unable to run MGTools

I was following the instructions for removing Malware. When I got to the 'Run MGTools' all I would get is the Command line with a couple of NT Authority 16-bit errors. Your instructions were to click on the 'Ignore' button. After clicking on the 'Ignore' three times the Command line window closes and I don't see any other activity. :confused

Is that how MGTools is supposed to work?

    Thanks

What malware problems are you having?

Did you complete all of the below also? If so, and you have run SUPERantispyware, MalwareBytes, RootRepeal, Combofix (unless you are on 64 bit) Then try running MGTools.exe in safe mode if you are not able to in normal mode.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

The system was completely locked when I started. Once I was able to get to the Safe Mode I ran the ESET Online Scanner. That removed about 90 infections, malware and virus. That allowed me to fix the regedit and task manager access.

I then started following the Major Geeks Malware Guide that you have in your post. The SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes found and removed over 600 infections of spyware, malware and trojans.

The next step in your guide is to run MGTools. As I stated in my original post, the MGTools appears to just quit and exits after hitting the NT Authority warning 'Ignore' three times. MGTools did the same thing in both Safe and normal boots. I have also run the 'defogger'. Do I need to run the 'defogger' again and reactivate whatever it turned off, before running MGTools?
    Thanks

So what about ComboFix? Did you run that?

Now rename MGTools.exe to 123.com and try again in normal mode and safe mode if normal mode still gives problems. Then if that fails, you can run OTL:

    Download OTL to your desktop.

    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • Vista and Windows 7 users Right-click OTL and choose Run as Administrator)
    • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
    • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Attach both of these logs into your next reply.

Thanks. That worked. I ran combofix again and then ran 123.com (renamed MGTools). I do believe the system has now been rescued.

This is an awesome Forum. Keep up the great work.

After running all of those tools I just received a surprise. After installing Microsoft Security Essentials, and doing a full scan, more infections were found. So, I thought I should provide an update.

I am stuck with one problem. No matter what I do, I can't get rid of 'Win32/Yaludle.A'. I deleted all Interent Temp files, Prefetch files and turned off System Restore. It keeps coming back as: file:C:\WINDOWS\system32\4435740391.CPX.

    Any suggestions?

You need to attach the below logs

    • the log from SUPERAntiSpyware
    • C:\Combofix.txt - you did not attach the log from combofix.
    • the MGlogs.zip file which is the reuqested log from running MGtools. Make sure you allow MGtools to finish running since the filelog.txt log you attached, shows it did not finish. Shutdown protection programs before running.
If you still have problems running any of the above, I suggest that you first re-run Malwarebytes and immediately update it and then run a FULL SCAN rather that a quick scan. This will take much longer but my prove helpful. After running Malwarebytes, retry the other tools and be sure to attach all logs including the new log from Malwarebytes.
Considering the fact that you had/have a bunch of system files infected, you could have a Virut type infection which may require a reinstall.

Here they are. However, I am unable to locate any log from SUPERAntiSpyware. I did include the original scan log from the ESET scan.

You have a lot of malware on this PC. You seriously needed to reconsider your surfing habits.

MGtools still did not run properly. Also your ComboFix log did show that several system files had been infected. There could be more.

Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple is merely informational.

cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another single scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

After running the above, also attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will have any info from the above added to it.

Note that both McAfee and XoftSpy are infected and you should uninstall them now since they cannot be trusted. In addition, later steps ( after we try to address MGtools ) will require that we delete files and folders from McAfee and XoftSpy, so it is best just to uninstall now. DO NOT reinstall yet since this would only complicate the problems.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it. Be sure to scroll all the way down to copy all of it since it is long.
    Code:

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Then attach the new C:\combofix.txt log

McAfee and XoftSpy were among the first things removed. As usual Mcafee was a total pain to remove.

I will get the new logs to you as soon as I can.

When attempting to run MGTools I still get the following responses:

Trying to run "GetRunKey" I get:

    16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

    "Close" "Ignore"
After clicking 'Ignore' twice the cmd window closes.

    The ShowNew.Bat says:

The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

I will work on getting the other logs to you tomorrow.

It still did not go away properly. We will fix this below along with some other issues.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - SOFTWARE - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: Comcast Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-93BE-BE2DF4D9AE29} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMCAS~1\COMCAS~1.DLL (file missing)
    O23 - Service: McAfee WSC Integration (McDetect.exe) - Unknown owner - c:\program files\mcafee.com\agent\mcdetect.exe (file missing)
    O23 - Service: McAfee Task Scheduler (McTskshd.exe) - Unknown owner - c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mctskshd.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: McAfee SecurityCenter Update Manager (mcupdmgr.exe) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\Agent\mcupdmgr.exe (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you. Sorry for the delays in responding. I am currently working 3rd shift, 7-days a week.

The problem I am left with is when I start IE or any other MS Application the MS Installer pops up asking for the original MS Office Professional 2003 CD to finish the installation. How can I turn off this installer? Especially since I do not have that CD.

  21. chaslang

I suggest that you post in the Software Forum for help with this problem since it is not a malware issue. It is a problem frequently seen related to Windows installed applications. While it may or may not be triggered by some malware problems, there is nothing we can do about it here. Our suggestions would be to try using Windows Installer CleanUp Utility and/or uninstalling Office. But sine you have no CD, you then would be left without all of the Office 2003 applications.

    Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003

A required installation file SKU011.CAB could not be found.

I wil go ahead and post in the Software Forum.

    THanks for your help.
