slow connections -i call ask for advice and i get a dropped call or they just hang up-i wonder how i find out why that happened?guess its impossible to find out--the isp seems to have turned into such odd people

so is it the modem? i had a modem from them, then found one used cheap and they helped me set it up, then i went back to their new modem then got a slow connection

so if i buy a used modem and just plug it in will it work always?well now the used i have is working but is it because it was once set up on my line?the wireless works --i guess its good to go, but i wanted the guy to do a speed test and he hung up

maybe theres nothing else to configure on this--i feel like dumping them forever and just getting a straight talk hot spot for 15 a month-im on internet too much anyway-one gig for 15 and i can skip a month or 2 i guess

    and use starbucks etc

also would my isp on internet tell me how many gigs of data ive used monthly?

    Do your own speed test:
    http://www.speedtest.net/
If you want a better ISP look at reviews and go to a comparison website.

Typically, when you replace the modem, you need to contact the ISP so they can register the MAC address of the modem to your account and assign an IP to it.

You need to look at your contract and see what you are paying for. Then use the speedtest.net link Max provided and see if you are getting that. The problem is, many of those contracts say you will get "up to" some speed. They should say a minimum.

I don't know but your modem and/or router should.

i wonder if its working because i used it a few years ago and a record is stored--it seems to work 60% better than the thing i paid a 100 for--they hang up on me or i get dropped calls...i dont think i like century link anymore--i have just a modem and i dont even know what a router is -guess i could google it

they say type in a number where i can be reached -i did ,so why didnt they call me back?bad people i guess

    Do the speed test suggested.

Line test of speed is crucial and it compares what you have now vs what you think you should have and had in the past, also if using telephone cables for broadband over cable (and cable for that matter) test the line noise, just pick up the phone, listen for crackles or hiss.

Also if phone bb then test only main line, unplug any other phones.

Even if like me you have a phoneline for DSL you can plug a phone in to see if line noisy at all, also if the line shares with other phones unplug all to test as your ISP will ask you this. Speedtest is a global test so works will all browsers and if it doesnt then I would be running the malware guide steps from here

I ran this speed test and wouldnt you say i have a slow connection?

It is slow, but as I noted above, you need to look at your contract and see what you are paying for.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/...rnet-service-providers-upload-speed/86361172/ i should know all this stuff by now are they dropping the decimal point here?ok for instance someone who has bottom cheap plan at Comcast can hope for what?guess ill have to google all this

Depending on your location, you may experience download speeds of up to 40 Mbps. However, the more common speed range detected by third party testing is 20 Mbps. If you are a casual internet user, CenturyLink, utilizing its acquired infrastructure, should be able to satisfy your needs.
http://www.toptenreviews.com/services/internet/best-internet-service-providers/centurylink-review/ is the decimal point dropped?

    btw how does dialup compare?

    thanks

Seriously? Dial up is hardly available any more, requires a special modem and is so very slow you'd barely be able to surf.

    Dialup is painful!
Today's internet pages are not for dialup users. Even with no adds and flash off, pages still seem to take forever to load.

In 2011 we were without power for 8 1/2 days. I got out my old USRobotics external modem and found a computer I could connect it to. I just wanted to check email. It was so painfully slow that I gave up! Instead each evening we drove to McDonald's to warm up, get something to eat and use the hotspot on two netbooks.

I won't waste any time trying to use dialup when there are more and more free hotspots available.

i had dial up from 2000 to 2013-i sort of like it -less news less stuff to look at -just do a few things and get off and listen to some internet radio that seemed to play ok usully

and i was even happyer when i had no phone for years

well my Qwest used modem has been working fairly well so i guess im set for a while anyway

the 7 gig mp3 hourly radio shows i listen to take about 4 minutes to download -not too bad?

i know i went to a cafe and it took only like 30 seconds

    thanks

Jonah, if you are unhappy with the results and ensuing phone calls, I'd suggest looking at another provider in the area or going to a centurylink store to explain your problems. Yes, they exist. I'd stear clear of Centurylink, who is in the process of acquiring Level 3 at the moment. Whom provides most of the internet backbone in the US. I personally like Comcast, who may be bastards in terms of pricing, but their speeds are pretty reliable on my end. You can get 10 Mbps internet from them for like $39.95 a month I think. Which is more then enough for you to browse email and download your radio show.
