    I have recently got a laptop off of ebay from CSR industries for school. It is a Dell Latitude D800, the OS is Windows XP Pro. Following the help from a similar site, I have found out that my laptop is infected with a virus, my flash drive too! Unfortunately the person who was helping me closed my topic on that site so I am SOL. Can someone please help me to restore the proper function of my computer?

    Go here: http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=202231 to read what the previous help website and I have done.
    Note: there are 3 pgs.

    I have tried using the following programs to purge my computer of this virus, to no avail, the virus will shut down the program in the middle of scanning or it will stop me from deleting the virus after scanning. After, I can't run the programs again:

    • Malware bytes
    • Super Anti Spyware
    • Spyware doctor
    • Norman Malware Cleaner Press
    • ATF

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    I first suggest that you install this:
    AutoEater.

    Please try doing the below:

    Download and save the below to your PC (save it anywhere you can find it. The Desktop is fine). Then doube click on it to run it.

    AVPFind.bat

    It should take a couple minutes to run. You will see a black command prompt window while it is running and it should close when it is finished. Once it finishes, attach the c:\avplog.txt file that is will hopefully create as long as the malware does not block the batch file from running.

    Now download and Run exeHelper

    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)

    Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

    Also please try running the below online scan:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

    Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. It does not save a log.

    Then try running these instructions: Using MGtools

    Attach the below logs when finished with all of the above:

    • C:\avplog.txt - from AVPfind
    • log.txt - from exeHelper
    • C:\MGlogs.zip - from MGtools

    The C:\ assumes that drive C is you Windows boot drive. If you boot from another drive, then use the correct drive letter above.

    >I don't have internet on my laptop so can I use a public library computer to download these files to my flash drive, then my laptop? I ask this because naturally the virus has infected my flash drive, but when I use it at the public library their security system(McAfee) cleans the drive. If I download the files to my drive AFTER it has been cleaned will it work?

    I will not try to download the software until my last question is answered and I know that what I want to do will work. Can SOMEONE please respond?

    This post contains info from SAS and AutoEater.

    SuperAntiSpyware:

    The online scan found 4 threats on my computer as files, but when I tried to delete these threats they remained on my computer. I have scanned my computer with this same program previously and it found 1 threat in my registry and 1 as a file and then I also couldn't delete them sucessfully.

    AutoEater:

    AutoEater detected an autorun.inf file on my flashdrive repeatedly. Every time I would delete the file it would return.

    You didnt tell me what files SAS online scan found that it did not remove. I also suggest that you remove anything you need from your flash drive and then reformat it.

    Let's start with this:
    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
    to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt

    • When I ran MGTools did it create: C:\MGtools\analyse.exe?
    • What is ComboFix.exe; how do I get it?

    In the future could you post any programs that I need to download as attachments?

    Analyse.exe is in the MGTools folder. I gave you that path in the instructions. Did you not look for it?

    ComboFix is in the Read and Run First instructions. combofix.exe

    you MUST save & later run this to from your Desktop!

    Could you please post combofix.exe as an attachment because my school has internet computer protection that won't let me download the file from the link you provided. My school is one of the only places I have access to the internet.

    *The viruses SEEM to have left my computer because my flash drive is no longer infected with a stubborn autorun.inf file and I ran another scan with SuperAntiSpyware and it found no threats.*

    • Is there a way I can be 100% sure that my computer has NO viruses on it?
    • Should I install security software IF the viruses are gone, such as Microsoft Security Essencials because when my computer got infected I had no security.

    Your log shows that you have Spyware Doctor installed with anti-virus...is this a paid for version?

    You are missing a system file.

    Download and save this XPsp3bu.exe to your C:\ root folder. You must do this properly. Now run the XPsp2bu.exe program by double clicking on it. You may or may not notice a quick flash of a black window. This is normal. The program runs quickly and just extracts some files we need.

    Code:
    KILLALL::

    FCopy::
    C:\MGtools\temp\eventlog.dllmg | c:\windows\system32\eventlog.dll

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe

    The Spyware Doctor was not purchased, it was free. Although my computer says that it has Spyware Doctor with Antivirus, it does NOT. I had downloaded Spyware Doctor to get rid of the viruses on my computer (before I joined Major Geeks). The virus crippled Spyware Doctor and so in an effort to "uninstall" Spyware Doctor I deleted all of its files and when I went to ADD AND REMOVE PROGRAMS the computer said something and just took Spyware Doctor off of the list of installed programs. My computer's Security Center says that Spyware Doctor is there (it is NOT), but is "turned off." I have downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials; is there a way to get ALL evidence of Spyware Doctor off of my computer?

    Spyware Doctor is being reported on your E: drive. Is this a thumb drive that you need to clean up?

    Spyware doctor is not on my E: drive. To make sure I have reformatted my drive. Is there a way to get the security center to stop reporting that Spyware Doctor is turned off when it's not even installed in the computer?

    I apologize for the delay.

    Let's do this:

    download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Microsoft Security Center is still reporting that I have multiple anti virus programs on my computer. I should only have one, MSSE. Is there a way to correct what anti virus programs MS Security Center thinks I have on my computer?

    Since I have already ran XPsp3bu.exe, can I delete it?

    Your logs are clean. But we can do this to remove the left over security items.

    Code:
    KILLALL::
    [B][COLOR=#9932cc]
    [/COLOR][/B][COLOR=#9932cc][COLOR=Black]SecCenter::
    {D3C23B96-C9DC-477F-8EF1-69AF17A6EFF6}[/COLOR][/COLOR][B][COLOR=#9932cc][COLOR=Black]

    [/COLOR][/COLOR][/B][COLOR=#9932cc][COLOR=Black]Folder::
    C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus[/COLOR][/COLOR][B][COLOR=#9932cc][COLOR=Black]

    [/COLOR][/COLOR][/B][COLOR=#9932cc][COLOR=Black]File::
    C:\XPsp3bu.exe

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now you may wish to run this as it looks like you tried to remove Norton at some point but it left some traces:
    Please give the Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) a run > reboot your machine and then run it again for good measure.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
