I am using Vista with Firefox and have been with no problems for years. 2 days ago when I clicked to open a web page from the web browser it redirected me to another site, stating my computer was infected and began to run a virus remover. I had to shut down. Now the web browser opens but when I click on a page it will not even open the page, it gives the error unable to open page. I have Mcafee antivirus which says no threats found when I run that. I do have cccleaner and ran it but to no avail. The tool bar across the top of my web page looks different as if it has installed another tool bar with icons I never saw before. I need help because I am totally locked out of the internet.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Thank You very much for the information and for you assistance. I have completed everything you said above on the read run me first, until I get to the step to download te tools. I cannot get to any web sites to do any downloads. I cannot get any of the links to open because when I click to open I get redirected to another site or it says server cannot be found

Can you either try in safe mode with networking to download the tools, or... use another PC to transfer the tools to flashdrive, then back onto your PC to run.

I do not have a flashdrive. I'm not sure how to use safe mode networking?

Then perhaps borrow one or easier still, substitute flashdrive for CD.

The Malware scan will not run. It locks up about 3 minutes in to the scan and will not move.

Hello there. You really need to read this:

HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

I need the logs from running MGTools.exe to be attached properly. It should be sitting right on your C:\ drive and you need to attach the C:\MGlogs.zip into your next post after reading how to attach :)

Ok guys, I think I have everything posted, if not let me know. I got the Superspyware, COmbofix, Rotrepaeal, Mgtools. As I said earlier, the Malwarebytes scan will not run. After several trys Both in safe mode and reqular mode, it continues to lock up about 3 minutes into the scan and will not move. I have to then shut down. I have to continue to operate in safe mode otherwise a pop up screen pops pretending to be a virus scan stating my computer has a virus. After running all the above scans it continues to happen.

You really are wasting valuable time here which could be spent removing malware. :( I already linked you to information on how to attach logs, that includes the C:\Mglogs.zip Click on My computer > double click C drive, now look for the C:\Mglogs.zip and attach it into your next reply. I repeat, until you do this and attach all logs I cannot help you. Do not post logs like this inline in future as it takes time for me to edit and delete.

No it isn't. I clearly explained what I need. And so did the R&R. Cannot help you until you attach the correct log.

19 posts later and still no nearer to helping you. :(

MGlogs.zip is in the same place as where MGTools.exe is.

I hope this is it. If not I am at a loss as to what to do.

I too am running out of options here, I do not know why you cannot locate the log. Bear with me I want to check something....

Let me explain this another way. On your C drive, you successfully located the log from combofix which you posted inline wrongly (I attached it for you) but the point I am trying to make is that you did indeed find it.

Also on your C drive are the following:

    • C:\MGTools.exe - the MGTools executable
    • C:\MGTools - the MGTools folder which contains batch files and analyse.exe etc.
    • C:\MGlogs.zip - the zipped file of all the logs created when you ran MGTools.exe. Well THIS is what I need :)

Take a slow careful look, click on Start > click on Computer > double click your c drive > and look for a zipped file (not a normal text file) it will bealled MGlogs.zip.

Once you have located it, then you can make a fresh post here > scroll down once your reply window is open, look for "manage attachments"

button, hit that... browse to Computer > double click C Drive > scroll down the list of items until you reach Mglogs.zip > highlight the zipped file > click open > hit "upload" type your response to me if you wish to make one. You can even PREVIEW your post to see if you have done it correctly before submitting your reply. :)

This one says mglogs.zip. If this is not it then I don't have it

Yes!!! This is what I have been requesting all along :)

I have to go to work soon so I don't think I will be able to get back to you until a little later on, but rest assured I will respond soon with a set of instructions.

Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

Hello there. Please be careful to pay attention now to all my instructions, and ensure that you do indeed answer any questions that I ask.

    1. What can you tell me about the below files?

    2. Why were you running scans in safe mode? Describe what happens to me when you boot normally?

    3. You have been running MGTools.exe from the wrong location, so now just delete the below bold file:

    4. Please go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following software:

    • Viewpoint Media Player
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 17
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 2

    5. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    6. Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    7. Now I want you to try and Run Malware Bytes again. Let's do it a slightly different way:

Please download This Renamed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware File and save to your desktop.

    • Right click on the renamed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware File on your Desktop and chose Copy.
    • Next go to Start > Computer > C > Program Files.
    • Right click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Folder and click Paste.
    • Next Double click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Folder and launch the renamed file, malwarebytes should run now and update.
    • Please follow my previous instructions for running it, and post the log in your next reply.

    Is this still happening?

And is this still the case?

    8. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Malware Bytes.

    9. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Thank You for your response. Everything was going along just fine, then I hit a snag about #6.
To answer your questions. #1. have no idea what those files are for.
#2.I run in safe mode because in normal boot, when I enter something into Google search like Major Geeks, and when the list of web sites comes up. At the point when I click to open a site, The major geeks site does not open, another site opens stating I have a virus on my computer and I need to run a virus scan. It appears like an official windows thing but when I try to X or close the whole thing freezes and I have to restart. The only way I can move is in safe mode. The only way I could get the software you said to download was in safe mode.
#3 I think I deleted the MGtools file as instructed,
#4 I did the add/remove to remove View point media player, however when it came to the 2 java ones it said the windows installer could not find the programs
#5 went well i think, it said those items were successfuly removed.
#6 however says cannot import, can only import binary

I have not done anything beyond this point. Let me know if I should continue, or what to do

Please refrain from quoting large segments of text like you did before. I edited it out because it makes it harder to read the thread.

I need you to be in normal mode and not safe mode whilst we complete the below please.

    1. Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v

    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply.

    2. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:

    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\users\Jared\AppData\Local\rdr_1268009069.exe
    c:\users\Jared\AppData\Local\rdr_1268007537.exe
    c:\users\Jared\AppData\Local\rdr_1267984211.exe
    c:\users\Jared\AppData\Local\rdr_1268082086.exe

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670}\NoExplorer]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    3. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix. and TDSSKiller.

    4. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

I hope these are the correct files. Everything seems to be running ok now. No redirecting of web pages, now running in normal mode, ok now,

    That's good to hear. :)

Just a little remains to be done then:

Use windows explorer to find and delete the below bold files:

To find them, simply follow the file path that you see like I explained to you earlier when we were trying to get you to attach the logs. :)

Make sure that you keep SUPERANTIspyware and Malware Bytes, and run regular scans say once every fortnight or weekly if you prefer, update > scan > fix all the programs find.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
