    So for about a week now, I've been trying to figure out what's been popping up and redirecting me, but then about 3 days ago, things started slowing way down. Worse than a crawl. I've downloaded and ran, Avast, Malwarebytes, aswMBR, and Anti Threat Toolkit. It seems all these are able to recognize the problem, but not eliminate it.

    I'm coming to you now from my laptop computer, b/c my desktop is trying to restore to a point just a couple hours ago before I ran PCTools scan and clean up. I'm on my fourth blue screen.

    I'm running windows 7 32bit. Can you guys help me out?

    ~Brad

    Welcome to the Malware Removal Forum.

    Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

    Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

    READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
    Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Good morning,

    I have completed the Read&Run me as instructed.

    Steps 1-5 of the Read&run (Show hidden files, disable CD emulation, run CCleaner)

    On to Cleaning for Windows 7...

    I have just completed steps 1-4(still checking on step 4)

    I ran all scans singularly after turning down my user account control, restarted when prompted to by the MG guides for each scan (very thorough, I thank you for that.).

    I will include all the logs from the scans below, but so far so good. There is one thing that I am unsure of; there are now two files on my desktop titled "desktop.ini", one is locked (gold lock?) and both have gears on them while being kind of translucent (hidden files?). What should I do with those?

    Thank you again for all your help.

    Leave them. They are just files normally hidden now showing.

    Could you please attach the MGlogs.zip from running MGTools.exe?

    I thought that that wasn't what I was needed to do. I hope this is the right one. Thank you again.

    Yes that was the right one.

    Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode

    Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    When it opens, press the Scan button
    Now click the Registry tab and locate these 3 detections:
    • [Services][ROGUE ST] HKLM\[...]\ControlSet001\Services\5897 (\??\C:\Users\BRADT~1\AppData\Local\Temp\5897.sys) -> FOUND
    • [Services][BLPATH] HKLM\[...]\ControlSet001\Services\MBAMService ("\mbamservice.exe") -> FOUND
    • [Services][ROGUE ST] HKLM\[...]\ControlSet002\Services\5897 (\??\C:\Users\BRADT~1\AppData\Local\Temp\5897.sys) -> FOUND
    Place a checkmark each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.

    ...and the same for Files/Folder entries please.

    • [ZeroAccess][FILE] @ : C:\Windows\Installer\{088ffe96-b649-864d-8bc3-2ac28cab9c6d}\@ --> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][FOLDER] U : C:\Windows\Installer\{088ffe96-b649-864d-8bc3-2ac28cab9c6d}\U --> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][FOLDER] L : C:\Windows\Installer\{088ffe96-b649-864d-8bc3-2ac28cab9c6d}\L --> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][FILE] @ : C:\Users\Brad T\AppData\Local\{088ffe96-b649-864d-8bc3-2ac28cab9c6d}\@ --> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][FOLDER] U : C:\Users\Brad T\AppData\Local\{088ffe96-b649-864d-8bc3-2ac28cab9c6d}\U --> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][FOLDER] L : C:\Users\Brad T\AppData\Local\{088ffe96-b649-864d-8bc3-2ac28cab9c6d}\L --> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][FILE] Desktop.ini : C:\Windows\Assembly\GAC\Desktop.ini --> FOUND
    • [Susp.ASLR|Sig - ZeroAccess][FILE] services.exe : C:\Windows\system32\services.exe --> FOUND

    When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
    Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)

    • Reboot the machine.
    • Re run TDSSKiller and attach the new log
    • Re run RogueKiller and attach that log too.
    • Let me know how things are running. Is Windows Update functioning okay?

    Here are the logs you requested. Everything seems to be running alright. No problems yet. The second scans after the first RogueKiller scan both looked clean. I'm hoping this means I'm out of the woods on this one.

    I can't express enough how thankful I am to have found you guys. I will be recommending this site to everyone I know. :)

    OK. Looks good. Just tell me, go to start > run > type in services.msc and look for the Background Intelligent Transfer Service if it shows and let me know its status and start up type.

    I'm not seeing Background Intelligent Transfer Service in this list at all.

    Download the below file to your desktop.

    BITS.reg

    • Now please click Start, and type regedit into the search box.
    • You should see a regedit.exe and icon appear in the Programs area of the Start Menu.
    • Right click on regedit.exe and select Run As Administrator
    • Then in the Registry Editor menu click File and select Import.
    • Navigate to the BITS.reg file saved to your Desktop and double click it. Allow it to be added to the registry.

    Now is it listed? If so let me know status and start up type please.

    I managed to download it after I went back to IE and got out of Chrome. I double clicked the BITS.reg and it said it was added. I went back into Services.msc and it still does not show the Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

    I'm not sure If I'm misreading a step or not, but I have both regedit and services.msc open and after double clicking (and importing) the BITS, it's not showing in Services even after exiting and reentering.

    Unintentional bump.**

    I was reading about this problem elsewhere and they had a fix for it. So I searched the registry for the BITS folder (.jfif) and updated it's permissions to full control and merged BITS.reg again. I now have the Background Intelligence Transfer Service and it's startup type is Automatic (delayed start).

    I hope this helps with wherever you happen to be leading me. Thank you again.

    Excellent. Windows Updates working perfectly then? If all is good you can follow the final steps below.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    My windows updates are not working at all. Something about the service isn't running. Even though I have this BITS in my registry, something isn't running in the background that searches for these updates. Any idea what that could be?

    And once again, thank you for all your help.

    Yes. The Base Filtering Engine service needs repairing. We should run this first. (It takes a LONG time so go off and sdo something else whilst it runs)

    Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

    When you have finished that download the below file to your desktop.

    BFE.reg

    • Now please click Start, and type regedit into the search box.
    • You should see a regedit.exe and icon appear in the Programs area of the Start Menu.
    • Right click on regedit.exe and select Run As Administrator
    • Then in the Registry Editor menu click File and select Import.
    • Navigate to the BFE.reg file saved to your Desktop and double click it. Allow it to be added to the registry.

    Reboot the machine.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    I'm sorry for the late reply, I've had to take to checking the site once a day to see if I have a reply due to not getting reply notifications unprovoked.

    In any case, here's the logs after running the tweaking and then merging the BFE to my registry.

    Thank you again.

    I'm pretty sure that things are running better now than they did before. Can you tell me though, how do I get Windows 7 to let me pin things to my taskbar again? It seems that I can't pin anything that isn't a windows specific program when I had several things pinned to it before.

    Once again, thank you for all the help.
