    Hows it going?

I woke up this morning to find my computer plagued with pop-ups and a bunch of messages from Windows System Defender. I ran MBAM and it showed that I had over 700 infections. I removed them and rebooted my laptop. Once it started up the same things happened. Please help if you can and let me know if you need any more information. Thanks

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Hopefully I'm doing this correctly. I was able to do the SuperAntiSpyware and MBAM without any problems and have those corresponding logs. However, I tried to run Combofix and received an error message stating that it was compromised and I should try to download it from the bleepingcomputer.com site. When I tried running RootRepeal, the rogue anti-virus Windows System Defender pops up thus stalling and freezing the RR scan. Lastly, when I attempted to run MGtools, the 16bit MS-DOS Subsystem error message popped up. Again thanks for your time

I actually looked at that and saw that my error message was Type 2. But, when I try to click on the link a new tab shows up saying,

    'Sorry. We can't find "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314452/"
There was a problem loading your page. Try retyping the URL in the browser address bar above or, visiting a related link below.'

I actually can't open any microsoft page. I either get that message or get redirected to Gala Search.

Yes I was able to do that. Everything went smoothly. What does that fix and what am I to do now?

You should now be able to run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

I attached the MGlog. However, when I tried to run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file, it opened but only for a split second and closed. It did not seem like it did a scan.

What was the exact message you got when you tried to run Combo?

It is looking like you have a virut infection. If this is the case, the safest thing for you to do is backup your personal data immediately since your PC could possibly become unbootable at any point in time. Do not back up any executable files. This includes programs that you have downloaded since any of them could be infected. Anything you may have already backed up that is an executable type file (things you downloaded to install programs....etc) are most likely infected and will cause you to be reinfected if you reuse these files.

Once you backup, you need to format partitions and reinstall Windows and all other software especially your protection software. Then install all updates for all software. DO NOT reinstall from any executable file backups you made while this PC was infected or you will just be reinstalling the infection.
