Windows Update Errors

For some reason I was behind on updates (my auto-updates wasn't on, but I don't remember turning it off ever). So I turned them back on and updated my computer, and when I restarted my computer did something called a "disk check" where there was a light blue screen before I was able to log in, that looked to be calculating the percentages of something... (the disk I guess?)

After that I logged in and a series of things happen each time I restart my comptuer now...

My desktop background loads without the start menu. I loaded task manager and did New Task and typed "windows." That loaded the task bar and two errors appeared.

A red box error you can see in the attachment and an error report.

I submitted the report which told me a driver needed updating, but it did not say which driver. Then I closed the browser and the error report box, only to find another error report... Same message. I kept clicking "don't send" and it won't go away. Eventually I just slid it into the corner because it was so obtrusive.

Another new thing is this magnifying glass in the task bar with something about "Indexing." Have no idea what that is, and it appeared right after windows updates. Hovering over it reads, "Indexing Complete." Right clicking it gives the options: "Snooze Indexing," "Index Now," "Indexing Status," etc...

Yet another random thing appeared... a box on my task bar that reads "Search Desktop." It has no option to shut it down, I'd like to remove that if possible.

Anyway, any help with any of these annoyances would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Could you specify what type of Windows you are running?

did you select the custom up-date tab to retrieve your updates, because windows search is an optional program, sometimes those custom updates can be incompatible with the way the system is configured, did you try a system restore yet?the express ones are usually safer and basic ,try a system restore ,if that works..then just retrieve the express updates

Yes, I think I did get the custom ones too. I just tried system restore to July 16th and things seemed to go drastically wrong...so I undid it immediately.

Forgot to mention I'm using Windows XP.

    Thanks for the reply.

Edit: Tried July 7th. Said "Cannot restore to July 7th."

Do you have an intel wireless chip?

I also found this posted from 2004
which seems to fit your situation.

Hello, thank you for the reply.

I am not sure how to use Hijack this, but I don't see that file. I will post the log if it can help. Thanks again.

Sorry, I'm not a hijackthis expert either. I see a few things that say file missing.
I suspect they might be okay to fix.

But, I think the much safer thing to do, since both of us are novices at this, is to go here
    http://hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english
paste in your log and see what that site says about the entries.

    I don't know about this F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\twex.exe
I'm trying to figure out what F2 means.

Looks like you probably have a baddie, Shizoku.

I would suggest that you work through this and start a new thread in the Malware Removal Forum.

@ plodr - Info on what a F-2 HJT entry is:

    Hello,

Thank you for the help. After running the procedures (beside Rootrepeal, this download site would not load) the startup seem to be normal... Crossing my figures as usual. Should I still run Rootrepeal at a later time when I can access the site?

    Thanks again.

    ;)

I'm glad that you got relief. To be sure that you're malware free, perhaps you should go ahead and create that new thread in our Malware Removal Forum with the requested logs.

Note: There seems to be random machines that RootRepeal will not work on. My advice is still to have your logs checked out.
