When I turn on my Inspiron 9300 Laptop the only icons appearing are as follows: (Many more should appear)
    My Computer
    My Network Places
    My Documents
    Recycle Bin
    Microsoft Office Outlook
    Internet Explorer

    Windows Recovery runs automatically
    5 errors detected:
    1) Hard drive doesn’t respond to system commands – critical error
    2) Boot sector of the hard drive disk is damaged
    3) Read time of hard drive clusters less than 500 ms
    4) Bad sectors on hard drive or damaged file allocation table
    5) 32% of HDD space is unreadable

It is almost continuously hitting on the hard drive

A "Hard Drive Failure" (Message box) eventually appears with the message
The system has detected a problem with one or more installed IDE/SATA hard disks. It is recommended that you restart the system.

Clicking Fix Errors in the Windows Recovery Dialog Box resulted in “failed to fix” in regards to each of the five errors.

Clicking the START icon in lower left of screen produces the graphical screen menu however nothing shows up as a START UP program and the All Programs menu is (empty)

    System Info
    BIOS version: A02 (02/23/05)
    Windows XP

Re: Problem accessing hard drive at startup

I think this might be a virus/malware. I don't like the vagueness of "The system has detected a problem with one or more installed IDE/SATA hard disks".

Does this screenshot look familiar? http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/viru...windowsfixdisk

    ***

    This is the problem.
I am able to boot in safe mode and change the folder settings but when I restart the computer the virus kicks in again. I tried deleting the executable associated with the icon the virus created on My Desktop but it returned after rebooting.

How do I get rid of this mess? TDSS rootkit seems to be present as well.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Also run this please. (Or see if you are able to)

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Java(TM) 6 Update 19 <--- Uninstall outdated Java

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-8CBD-FD60BB9AAE2E} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    c:\Program Files\GTStrudl
    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\18538292
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

I first assumed it best to startup in Safe Mode to avoid "undoing" everything I had previously done. However, the computer was unable to access Windows Uninstaller so I couldn't get rid of Java. So, I rebooted in Normal mode which seemed to work. However, when I attempted to Remove SuperAntiSpyware through the Add/Remove Progams I received an error message "Error reading uninstall data". I tried going to the SuperAntiSpyware directly and running uninstall by double-clicking but I received the same error.

When I rebooted in Normal Mode the initial SuperAntiSpyware screen appeared as though the program was going to run but it disappeared. When I double-click on the SuperAntiSpyware icon the main screen appears with the choices to Scan/.../Preferences ... The same thing happens if I right-click the icon in the tray and then left-click on Scan for Spyware, ...

What do I do? Can I just delete the SuperAntiSpyware folder to proceed on with your instructions and then clean up the mess left behind later?

Just skip the SAS step for now and continue on, yes.

I inadvertantly ran ComboFix without dragging CFscript. After it completed I then did what you had instructed me to do. ComboFix seemed to be finished and the computer attempted to reboot on its own. When it reached the screen where I could have accepted the XP OS or Windows Recovery Console it locked up and would not do anything. I eventually used the power button to shutdown the computer and then restarted it.

    A box appeared with a Title C:\ ComboFix - Find3M
The box included a message "Preparing Log report ..."
Eventually a new message appeared in the same box "Almost done ... ComboFix's log shall be located ..."

And then the log appeared on the screen in Notepad.

Java seemed to install completely and it now appears in the Add/Remove programs listing.

    The logs are attached.

Individual programs seem to be running correctly. I "enabled" my wireless connection just to see if it would and it indicates there is a connection. I have not attempted to connect to the Internet. I "disabled" the wireless connection to keep it out of the way of anything else that needs to be done. Removal of SuperAntiSpyware still does not work.

    Try Revo Uninstaller.

Choose the option on the bottom of the list (#4). Be very careful while deleting the bolded registry items ONLY!! This software will create a system restore point for you as well prior to uninstalling a software program.

Then attach the new SAS log if successful.

While Revo uninstaller was running the error message box "Error reading uninstall data" appeared. I closed it and things seem to have run normally from there. As the found files and folders were being deleted a message appeared indicating that some files and folders would be deleted on the next reboot. After the "successful" completion of Revo I used a Restart to reboot and the computer hung again when it reached the point of selecting an OS. I again used the power button to shut down and then restarted the computer again. It rebooted normally.

I reinstalled SuperAntiSpyware (there seemed to be no other choice to get an SAS log). The subsequent log is attached.

Now tell me what problems remain if any?

I believe everything is working properly.

I have been unemployed for 2 years with only income from occassional substitute teaching so I will have to wait until I have a job to donate some money to your cause.

Our country is a mess and my substitute teaching makes it clear our Public Education system is defunct so the future does not look good for anyone. Unfortunately it seems that too many of those who have an education choose to use it to spread computer viruses.

Keep up the good work. I do sincerely appreciate your help.

Look upon it as a gift from us :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
