    Hi!

We are having some serious virusproblems in a third world country, Samoa in the Pacific, and as we have good reasons not to trust the internet points and computer stores here you are our only hope...We had filmed the soccergame of a friend, and he wanted it so badly, so we connected our external harddrive Lacie Rugged 1TB to our friend´s Toshiba (he said he had no viruses). When we opened the harddrive on his computer, all the maps with files looked like shortcuts, shortcuts that could not be opened and are much smaller than the real maps (around 300 kb) instead of for example 2 GB. I didn´t get that this could be a virus, so I connected the Lacie to my Sony Vaio to see if I had done something wrong when moving the files from my Vaio to the Lacie. Directly when I put the Lacie harddrive to the Vaio computer, the AVG (free version) discovered a virus, I think it said it was a trojan horse, and the name I remember: it was xauim (or maybe xaoim). I clicked on ”remove virus” and AVG did that. After that, the computer worked well (as usual). Then we made a complete scan with the AVG on the computer and on the devices connected to it, that is, the Lacie and also an SD-memory card for a camera, and the AVG said it could find no threats. After that I did a backup on all my photos, my own films and my documents on another external harddrive, a WD My Book 1 TB. The computer worked fine. Then we shut it down (which we hadn´t done in a week or so), and now, when trying to start it, we just get to ”start up repair”. Start up repair runs and then it says ”start up repair cannot solve the problem automatically” and in the log it says that the cause is a problem with windows 32 or somthing like that. We tried with advancedrecovery options and we chose system repair, the computer said it did it successfully and was gonna restart. Then, after restarting, it just goes back to start up repair and it´s the same again, only this time, it says in the log that ”start up repair have tried several times but still cannot find the cause of the problem”.
Can this be fixed? (there was some kind of ms-dos thing you could try on the ”advanced recovery options” but I don´t know what command to put in there.)
I also wonder, are my two harddrives ok? Do I dare putting them into my other computer? Or will this infect my computer? (I am for the moment in the pacific and shooting a low budget documentary, I cannot risk losing more diskspace, that is, I cannot risk losing the discspace on my other computer, even if it´s fixable when I come home, I´m in desperate need of discspace!) According to the antivirus program, AVG, the virus should be removed, but I´m also afraid I,ve gotten other viruses from my friend´s computer, viruses that haven´t been discovered by the antivirus program. Is this possible? Or rather, is it probable? (I learned later thet the friend had no antivirusprogram on his computer.) My Avg was updated the day before this all happened (8th october).
Hope that someone can help me! Thanks for reading.
    Greetings from the Pacific!
    Louise

Hi there and welcome to MajorGeeks. :) Sadly until your machine is in a stable state and up and running normally again then there is not alot I can do to help you. You would have to visit the software forum to further discuss this and then return here to run scans and have me review the logs.

Just to be clear, can the computer be started in safe mode so that would get you to a point where you ARE able to run scans?

(Our malware removal procedures are as follows)

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.
