I uninstalled the premium version I had, rebooted my pc with Spybot paid version (which had AV with it and 45 days licence remaining) removed too and ran the portable version.

Portable version is now running as freeware.

Question - should I continue using Zemana portable with Windows Defender or should I buy Zemana in support and have them give me real time protection?

An installed version usually often disables defender, to avoid conflicts.
I have used an on-line Mcfee to do separate scans without problems, but, I would always be wary of more than one antivirus running to avoid conflicts.
A portable version may not be a problem, as you can run it when you wish, and not continuously.
Windows defender is so much better at its job nowadays.

Zemana portable also provides realtime protection but I don't know whether it also disables Defender when running. If it does not then there is the potential for conflict. I would ask that question of the authors before deciding what setup to maintain. I would not use Zemana until that has been answered.

I would think that anything portable as the name suggests would not offer realtime protection, Earthling.
I believe this link https://www.techsupportall.com/zemana-anti-malware-download-review-coupon-codes/ will answer your question as Defender is one program that is built in and I would think offer real time protection when activated.
I am no expert but if I was to research this I doubt I would be wrong.

Portable doesn't mean that it has to be installed on a USB stick.
I have portable apps sitting on folders on the desktop of my computer. I can then take the exe of any of those and put it in the Windows startup folder and it will run when Windows runs.

I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't but I said it did after reading posts from users that said they were using realtime protection. But the only way to know for sure is to test it, so I will.

EDIT - the site I am downloading from contains this -

Detect, remove and protect your computer from malware before infections take place with this portable version of a popular antivirus application

Considering that our online activity is greater by each passing day, it becomes quite evident that we need a robust software solution for keeping viruses trojans, worms and other types of malware at bay and our computers properly working.

Zemana AntiMalware Portable is a user-friendly and polished piece of software that does not only provide real-time protection against malware, but it can also scan, locate and remove threatening components from your computer, if need be.

I don't need to test it. The setup has this screen. So portable does have realtime protection but you have to pay for it.
