SC is prob up there among the top 5 RTS, but I don;t think it is the best, IMO of course.
I'm now on the last sequence of Assasin's Creed 2, and for those who haven't played it, it is a great game, the puzzles that go along with the Glyphs are tremendous.(Also very tough) The gameplay is great, game length is great, the story is great, the combat however, is far from difficult, much like the first one. I just started on Sacred 2, which I won't be playing much. :( (My little girl is hooked though)

Just picked up a copy of Sniper: Ghost Warrior from City International.

I've been waiting for a new sniper game and was dissapointed to see IGN give this game a 5/10.
But I take their scores with a pinch of salt because I often dissagree with them, so I fired it up last night, looks very pretty, lush enviroments and detail is a bit scatty, your Ghuilli suit looks kind of bland yet your trousers are well detailed as are your hands and gun. It does have some frame drops here and there but nothing major.
Overall I think it's a good game, not great, it's leaning more towards arcade shooter than sniper simulator which is what I was hoping for, if you play it on a difficulty setting less than hardest you get a red dot on your scope telling you where your bullet will hit, some obvious paths are blocked by invisible game world barriers and you occasionally get stuck on a small rock. Also the focus/hold breath feature is more of a slo-mo bullet time thing instead of straight up steady aim. Your enemies seem to often have x-ray vision and can spot you from a distance even though you are wearing a ghuilli suit and yet you cannot see them.
These issues asside, so far it's been very enjoyable, a bullet cam kicks in when you score a clean headshot and you do have to take distance and wind into consideration when lining up your shot.

All in all so far I would score it closer to a 7.5/10, it's a good fun game if you like sniping but if you're looking for an Operation Flashpoint or Arma style simulator, this is not it. But if you like a COD style sniper game with added wind/distance effects etc then you will most likely enjoy this game.

Will update when I have put more time in, this is a "First Impressions" mini review, but so far so good IMHO.

Now you've got me looking at those and thinking they might be a good time Nedlamar- I don't usually go for the war simulation type stuff but the sniping deal sounds entertaining. If Operation Flashpoint and Arma are the standard, which would you recommend?

I am currently playing Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen on my DS Lite. Never play it except when on the road, so lots of ground to cover and quests to make up for.

Oh, and on the PC I'm still working on Dragon Age, and I got Torchlight on the Steam sale recently. :)

I'm playing through Dragon Age too, though I got sidetracked about 10 hours in and reactivated my Eve accounts. I've enjoyed what I've seen of Dragon Age so far but was disappointed when a friend told me there was only about 30 hours of story not counting expansions- reserving judgment until I play through it myself though.

  17. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

That depends entirely on how you play. I've heard of people who finished it in 30 hours, 40, 50, some who played over 100+ hours including expansion. Personally, I'm at 85 hours, and about three fourths done with the main quest, before I can move on to the end-game. It's all in how you play. ;)

  18. ScoobySnack

Good, I like to take my time and explore every nook and cranny anyway and my friend is the type to just hurry up and 'win', so I was expecting more than 30 hours, but it worried me. So, good to hear. I think Fable scarred me when it came out lol- so much hype for maybe 10 good hours of playtime on the conservative side, side quests and all. I look at everything with a wary eye now. :mad

The Witcher ruined me too, it's a hard lot to follow up such a good game. So far Dragon Age has been a good one though.

While Arma is more realistic and better looking, so far Arma and Arma 2 have got some pretty heavy bugs going on, the first was almost unplayable and aparently the second too, they have just released a stand alone expansion called Arma 2: Arrowhead which is slightly less buggy by all accounts athough my boy borrowed it from his buddy and he said it's less buggy but still has major issues, I've yet to try the new one. The biggest issue it seems to have is frame rate drops, at some points down to 3-5fps for 10's of seconds even on the lowest settings.
Where Op Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is much much less buggy, it has on occasion errored the checkpoint so it wont move to next checkpoint, but a simple reboot of the game fixes that, it also has some minor key binding bugs, but again, only occasionally.
Op Flashpoint is definitely the best option, it is a great game, lots of fun, the realism is toned down slightly from that of Arma but even so if you get shot in the head you are done, a shot to the chest will shorten sprint time, shot to the leg will prevent sprinting and a shot to the arm will mess up your aim.
You also have to take into account distance and lead moving targets, awesome game.
It also has a sandbox editor where you can make your own missions reletively easily. I like to throw together a mission that is simply a snipe fest, I start on top of a large doment volcano, move into position and begin sighting my targets and decide which order to take them down, I give myself about 10 targets and provide them with sandbag cover.
Then I line up my shot almost at the bottom of the scope to allow for distance....I wait for the perfect moment... and fire, wait a second or 2 and watch my target flip like a ragdoll as his comrades try to figure out what hit him and where from.... little do they know it's me with my .50 cal Barrett M82 quietly laying in some grass just over 1.4km away :-D
Definitely worth a look, like I said, a little more buggy than a game should be but not enough to spoil the experience.
But I warn you, you are not gonna just aim at someones head and expect a kill, you will miss more often than not regaurdless of using a sniper rifle, M16, M4 or AK47, but whats really cool is if you simply have too many targets, you can call in artillary fire from offshore, just sit back and watch the fireworks :strong

You also have several oportunities to drive humvee's, fly helicopters or take up any one position in the vehicle, let your team drive/fly while you mount the gun.
It is team based, you order your team to do things either live in FP view or from the map, granted like any team based game sometimes they will do something idiotic that you didn't want them to lol, but the beauty of Op Flash:DR is it's a sandbox game, you are given 1st and secondary objectives and with only a couple of timed mission exceptions, you can approach whichever from any angle you like.... the downfall, be prepared for lots and lots of running, walking, crawling. Everything is to scale, so when it says your objective is 1.8km away, it WILL take you the same time it would in real life.
But again, this allows for freedom of play.

I play the same way you do... I explore everything, dialogue options included. I had a discussion with a group of people in a different forum where someone suggested that the only way you can beat Dragon Age in 30 hours or less is by fast-forwarding through all the dialogue and skipping all non-vital side-quests. Me being me, I have a difficulty understanding why anyone would want to do that? If a person has no interest in side quests with stories of their own and character development through dialogue, a Bioware RPG probably isn't what they should be playing...

And Fable isn't an RPG. It's an action-adventure with a few RPG elements tacked on for show. ;)

Dragon Age was awesome. Myself and my 13 year old girl are still playing it at least 8-10 hrs. a week. The expansion was well done as well. Since my last post on this thread, I've played Assasin's Creed 2 (very cool) and just started UFC 2010 undisputed!!!! , <------ tremendous game!!!
Assasin's creed 2 should be in everyone's library. The game play was cool, story line was good, 30 hrs+ of gameplay. :cool
Now for UFC 2010, I'm not usually a fan of fighting games, (well not since mortal combat 3, or killer instinct) but this game has it all, nothing is too easy, then again nothing is too hard. I played it for almost 10 Hrs, and was about to give up cause I couldn't figure out the submission system, And somehow, I figured it out. Def a must play just like DA and DA awakening. Oh by the way, where you located in smokey mtn. Scooby snack?

Just to update the whole Arma 2 vs Op Flashpoint, I played Arma 2 the other night for about 3 hours, it does look mildly better and is way more intricut and to some degree more realistic, but... still buggy as hell, I'll give some examples of things I noticed...

Voice over orders are demolished by other voice overs, like when you are receiving mission updates and one of your team spots an enemy he just starts talking over top of the orders and since the team mates voices sound like Stephen Hawkins in slow-mo, mixed together with mission updates just sound like a robot thats about to explode with confusion, not major, but quite annoying and offputting.

On several occasions my gun vanished, not a major prob until I had an enemy pop round a corner shooting at me and when I went to return fire my gun was gone, I got shot, my team killed him and a few seconds later I was healed by medic.

I died twice, both were just retarded..

!st time I was in training driving the humvee, I was moving approx 15-20mph, didn't see a 2foot high stone wall, crashed into it and for no aparent reason I died, not failed mission, I died.

2nd time was campaign mission, I went to plant c4 on a large generator, this thing was about 7 foot high and the size of a car, I hit the wrong button and started to climb the ladder fixed to the side of the generator, I climbed to the top and instead of climbing onto it, I fell off.... 7 feet to the ground.... aparently I broke my leg or something because I could not get out of prone, I brought up my menu and there was the option to call a medic, so I did.... about 12-15 times until he eventually arrived... then stood there for around 2 minutes and watched me bleed out while I scream out for medical attention.
This setback put me back to the begining of the mission, approx 35-40 minutes of play.

To me, that kind of harsh punishment for dying is just wrong in a game with this many problems.

I am going to try it again and give it another chance, but I have to say my first impressions are not great.
It's a shame because it has the makings of a fantastic game and I still urge anyone to try it out, maybe you will come across less bugs than I did/have.

  26. ScoobySnack

    ScoobySnack Private First Class

I played the first one and never finished it, the repetition (every city and mission was exactly the same with a slightly different layout) and lack of realism killed it for me (Hi, I'm an assassin proudly displaying my guild symbol on my spotless bright white robes with all the tools of my trade hanging openly on my belt while on a secret mission to kill someone in broad daylight because I only need to bow my head and clasp my hands in front of me to become instantly unrecognizable :-D lol sry mini-rant- did I mention that water is lethal? :-D) But the overall game concept was outstanding and it was a really enjoyable play until it started to feel recycled. It felt very unfinished. What did you think of the first one, and is the second one better? I'm tempted to try it I just have so much other stuff I want to play and so little time! :confused

About 2 hours south of you in the Chattanooga area. I was just in Knoxville the other day at the zoo!

AC2 is much better, but you don't want t get it for PC. Ubisoft threw in some of the dumbest and most intrusive DRM ever seen (mainly because it took them until two months after release to make it work properly). Just get it for PS3.

It really irks me that a company would make someone who came about the game honestly jump through hoops to enjoy content they've paid for, knowing full and well it's still going to be cracked and pirated regardless by the same communities of users that crack and pirate everything just because they can. Still, it sure looks good in pictures and if the want-to-play side of me overcomes the boycott-the-drm-junkies side of me, I'll get it. Unless my son keeps on me about that PS3 for Christmas. :-D

Yeah, I know... Which is why we need to buy every CD Project Red and Obsidian game we can get our hands on. They do reasonable and non-intrusive DRM, and unless their games actually sell well, no one else is going to bother.

AC 2 is much better, not as repetitive. More story, and water will not kill you!!!! It is really really good. The glyphs puzzles are really really tough, if you dont cheat, I bet noone would be able to get more than 8. Ps3 is a really good investment. I have all my old systems, still. But with the new PSP roms..... every game you could every want to play on any system, you can play ......

As a general rules, any time the term "rom" is involved, I try not to talk abut it here. ;)

It is technically possible to modify a PSP to play any PS1 game, as well as enable it to run emulators for all the older gaming systems. However, the technique for doing it is exactly the same as the one used to pirate PSP games, so this is pretty much as far as we can go with that conversation here. Which is a shame, in a way... few things are more geeky than hacking a gaming console and turning it into something it wasn't when you bought it. LOL

It seems like Sony could make a tidy sum of money on the side by making titles available for download from their archives for use on their consoles, including titles that weren't originally released for the playstation that no one else has any exclusive rights to but are owned by game makers they do business with. I'm sure they could even come up with some bit of coding that gave them a little more surety (to the extent that it exists) that pirating would be minimized. If they didn't price them outrageously, I'd be happy to pay a lump sum to get access to a handful of old games from this or that genre that weren't really available anymore.

  41. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

A lot of PS2 and PS1 titles are available for sale and download on the PlayStation Network already. I'd suggest getting the older ones on PSP, since the older graphics don't look very good on a big TV.

Picked up the PC version of Call Of Juarez: Bound In Blood.
Played it on PS3 a while back and liked it but never bought, only rented. Well since I don't have a PS3 at the moment I thought I'd get it for PC.

I like this game, it's pretty standard base story but the voice acting is great, lot of character and little jokes here and there and some of the comments the 2 brothers make to each other just add to the fun.
The gameplay is good, fairly generic FPS for the most part with some extras thrown in.
You choose which of the 2 brothers you want to play as for each level.

Thomas (which I play as most of the time) has a Lasso for reaching those hard to reach places and he has better long range accuracy, which bodes well with me since I'm a snipey gamer. His special ability is rapid fire with auto targetting.

Ray is more of the "Bust into a room and smash your face in with a chair" type of guy, slower and less agile than his brother , his special skill is dual weilding pistols in a similar manner to Thomas.

The special skills mentioned are earned by killing 6 enemies which charges the "6 Shooter" metre, once charged you have 1 minute to use it or it resets.
The main difference between the 2 is with Ray you simply move the mouse around targets that are frozen in time to mark them, then just let rip with 2 pistols, Thomas's is more fun, you hold down the fire button and pull the mouse back/down to fire each shot, simulation rapid left hand hammer use of the pistol.

The missions are nice and varied and every so often you get a bit of a break and a chance to earn some money and buy new guns by way of a small sandbox mode with a gun store that has posters on the walls with jobs, such as Assassinasion or retreiving stolen goods etc.

The boss fights are cool too, not really boss fights as we know them, you will frequently come up against someone in a "Quick Draw" standoff, where you will both pace slowly facing each other until the church bell rings, at which point you both "Go for ya guns"
The neat thing about this is not only do you have to move around keeping your target in centre"ish" veiw, but at the same time you have to control your hand with the mouse, keeping it hovered just nicely over your holstered gun. When the bell rings you swing your mouse inward and draw.... then a reticle will move upwards across your targets legs and to his body, it turns red once it hits his torso and from that point you can fire... trying to wait for the headshot normally gets you killed lol
Should you touch your gun too early, you lose, should you fire before reticle is red, you lose. Perfect control and timing are require to get the kill.
One of the best and most unique things about this game is the cover system, one of the best I've ever seen, you move to a rock or box or whatever and your guy automatically goes into cover, you then contolr popping up and fireing with the mouse in a very fluid and "Live Action" manner, as opposed to the standard "Hold and button to cover and push another button to pop out" style.

All in all this game is very enjoyable and anyone who likes a good FPS thats a change from the normal "Warfare" deals around will enjoy this Western set good old cowboy fight.

So pick up a copy and sit back and enjoy the feeling that only comes from a game where you can happily say.... "Go for ya guns, ya scum suckin' mollusc" :-D

I have Call of Jaurez, Bound in blood and the original Call of Juarez. I've played both for countless hours. I really enjoyed the second one. The gameplay on the first one is really good as well. But, The thing about the first one, you are running around half the time as the older version of Ray, and the other half the time as A kid named Billy, which is some how the other(not Thomas) brothers son. Evidently, and The first one, Ray gives up that life, and denounces guns and becomes a priest! :-D Then This kid Billy, (Ray thinks)kills Rays brother and his wife, so in classic Clint Eastwood (Unforgiven)
Ray lays down his collar, and takes up he guns in pursuit of his brothers killer Billy.

Either way, The second one is a lil better than the first, but you should def. play the first if your gonna' play the second.
