    Hi MajorGeeks,

First - I read a lot from the forum here, you are doing a wonderfull professional job.

My problem is this - after years of not heeding anything you wrote about keygens etc. I decided to go clean - both in my behavior and my computer.
I tried to treat my computer and failed - After AVAST won't run on my computer (and won't uninstall as well - problem #1)I executed Bitdefender Online a few times (between which I tried to do as much as possible from you do-first instructions), both the first and the last logs are attached.

My main problems - other then the unremovable bagle.rootkit and friends - are:

    #1 AVAST + mozilla uninstall + SpybotSD + .. gives a "Not valid win 32 file"
#2 No sound after Windows startup tune (No sound driver)
    #3 DVD drive doesn't work.
#4 an "Emule 0.49" window pop's up every now and then ..
#5 can't turn on viewing hidden files - I don't even have the heading in my view option + if I turn off hide system files it just turns on again at next startup, and doesn't let me view them anyhow.

I tried to do as told in your instructions but -

    1. uninstalling mozilla and avast failed.
    2. unhiding files failed as mentioned.
    3. Superantispyware (after manual update) shows a window for a blink of the eye but no more then that (I changed the name of .exe file before first operation).
    4. SpybotSD "not a valid win 32 file". when I search the .exe file to rename it's not there (hidden ??)
    5. MB.exe says "setup files corrupted"

At this point I had to face the fact things are not going as planned...
What should I do next ??
The most importent things I have on the computer are mainly JPG's , Word docs and Movie files (Lot's of important documentation). Are these safe to move to an external hard drive ? or are all the nasty little worms gone stick to the drive as well ?

    Thanks,

    Tal

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach

    OK.

I have worked through the end of the ReadME:

I could not start at safe mode since it restarted the computer automatically while loading windows each time I tried.
there was no TDSserv driver to be found.
After downloading MB again I managed to run it as well as Combofix and MGtools (Logs attached).

The sound finally came back ! And so was the ability to view hidden files !
So I run bit defender again to see if all the viruses/worms etc. were removed - far from it..

I didn't try it yet - but I might be able to run in safe mode now - Should I redo the ReadMe checks - So Ccleaner, SAS and Spybot may run as well ?

We did not ask you to run in safe boot mode. That is only necessary when your cannot run in normal boot mode.

Do not run any scans we do not ask you to run (like BitDefender). You can run other scans when we are 100% through with your cleaning and you have completed our final instructions but we are not there yet.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now try uninstalling Avast. If you get an error just continue on with the next steps.

Now download and reinstall Avast Antivirus from here: Avast! Home Edition

Now see if you can run SUPERAntiSpyware.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the log from SUPERAntiSpyware if it ran.
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi,

Sorry for not doing nothing between the posts but I'll keep the computer shut until the next post...

Done as told - all run smoothly, got success msg with the registry update.
Super anti spyware still discovered 2 types of trojans.

You asked how things are working - but I do not want to try and run anything else to check before you say were done.. Sound is fine, so is the internet connection (no incoming-outgoing traffic when no internet page open) and Avast! is up and running.

What should I do next ?

One more thing - I have "updates ready to install" on my taskbar - are they safe ?

Did the fixME.reg patch get added in successfully last time?? According to your logs it was not? We will try again in this fix. Make sure you get a success message.

Please do not rename downloads like below which I assume is MGTools.exe. Doing this makes it unrecognizeable and we and also scanners may assume it is malware.
    Code:
    2009-01-28 00:00 . 2009-01-28 00:01 1,336,053 --a------ C:\MGT2.exe
So now delete the below old versions of MGtools now since I will be having you download another new version later.
    C:\MGT2.exe
    C:\MGtools.exe

What are the below new files on you Desktop?
    Code:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Tal Profile\Desktop\"
    2d61~1.txt Feb 1 2009 6 "‘‰‘Ž€ Œ€‰ˆ˜ˆ.txt"
    cmax2.exe Jan 31 2009 3261530 "CMAX2.exe"

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now goto this link Using MGtools and download the new version of MGtools.exe from the black bold print link in the first sentence. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Done..

The registry update gave a success message both the previous time and this time.
CMAX2 on my desktop is combofix - both it and mgtools didn't work when we started until I downloaded them to a diffrent filename.
The .txt file is a file I created.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks for all the time and energy you invested, I couldn't have solved my problems otherwise! :wave
