I started having this problem two days ago after installing the latest automatic updates for Windows XP. I had the Microsoft Zune 3.0 software running at that time and was going to add more songs to my Zune mp3 player while the updates were being downloaded and installed. I also had COMODO Firewall running at the same time so it kept asking me to allow or block the processes for the updates. I was visiting some random web sites as COMODO Firewall asked me about the last three processes, and thinking they looked suspicious, I blocked them. After that, I had to restart my computer.

After I restarted my computer, I could no longer run the Zune 3.0 software. It keeps giving me the following error message: "Microsoft Zune has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I have the option to send the error report or not, but there's no further description of what the problem is or how to fix it. I restarted the computer again, thinking that might fix the problem, but it did not.

As I was trying to figure out this problem, another problem started. I was on Facebook and all of the sudden, I was automatically redirected to some sort of a web-based virus scanner (see attachment 1). It almost sounded legitimate because it says "Windows Security Alert" and "Windows Web Security" but I just wanted to be on the safe side.

However, regardless of whether I click the "Remove all" button or the "cancel" button (or any other action for that matters), it would prompt me to download a file called "Antivirus-75ff0_2040-2.exe" from "secure-virus-scannerv5.com" (see attachment 2). I tried to do a search on both of them to see if anyone else had reported a similar problem but came up with nothing.

I clicked "Cancel" and got another pop-up (see attachment 3) saying "Dont [sic] close this window if your [sic] want you [sic] PC to be protected." At that point I got really suspicious because of the three grammatical errors in one short sentence.

I clicked "Cancel" but it acted like I had clicked "OK" instead. I got another pop-up (see attachment 4) saying "Harmful and malicious software detected. These programs may damage your computer and steal your private information. Online Security Scanner requires Personal Antivirus components to repair your computer. Please click OK to download and install Personal antivirus tool" and the only option available was "OK."

I forgot how I did it the first time but I managed to close everything and when I restarted my computer, nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. I ran the following anti-virus/spyware programs just to be on the safe side:
    - a-squared Free
    - AVG Free 8.5
    - Lavasoft Ad-Aware Free Anniversary Edition
    - Spybot Search & Destroy
    - SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition
but they all came up with nothing except for a few tracing cookies.

Earlier today, I had just visited Facebook again and the same problem (automatically redirected to the web-based virus scanner) just happened again. And for the record, my Zune 3.0 software still doesn't work, in case that had anything to do with anything.

Has my computer been infected by something and how do I fix this problem? Thank you in advance.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First. If TDSSserv is not found, just continue on with the READ & RUN ME.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.
