    BOO/Sinowal.e is being detected on my machine, am at my wits end...have been trying for 3 days to remove this, now I am asking for some REAL help...I've tried Avira's bootwizard tool but it comes up "the boot record is unknown" also tried FixMBR from windows recovery console with no effect. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First. If TDSSserv is not found, just continue on with the READ & RUN ME.
    READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

    Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Thanks for your help, I have followed the Windows XP cleaning procedure and am attaching the logs as requested. Avira's boot scanner is still finding BOO/Sinowal.e in the bootsector of all three of my drives, so I will wait for more instructions. Thanks again.

    You are running two AV programs, please uninstall one of these:
    Kaspersky Internet Security 2009
    Avira

    You need to put msconfig back into normal mode. Then reboot.

    Please double-click the RootRepeal.exe previously downloaded.

    * Select File then Scan
    * On the Select Drives form select drive [ insert drive infected here ] by "ticking" the box for drive [insert drive here] and click OK
    * When the scan is complete - highlight each of the following file(s) (one at a time if more then one is listed) by left clicking it. Then use right mouse click and select the Wipe File option only for each file.
    C:\Documents and Settings\DAVID\My Documents\My Pictures\Models\MatureBitch\adgadg adgdag adgadgg\thank u falettinme be myself againthank u falettinme be myself againthank u falettinme be myself againthank u falettinme be myself againthank u falettinme be myself againthank.jpg
    * After Wiping all files, immediately reboot your pc!

    Now re-run RootRepeal.

    Now let's use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    d233

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\d233.dll
    c:\windows\system32\d233.sys

    Folder::
    C:\Documents and Settings\DAVID\Application Data\??curity
    C:\Program Files\Web Buying

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\Jxo]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\WebBuying]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    GMER's MBR.exe

    • Double click on the MBR.exe file to run it.
    • A log will be produced & saved to the desktop, called MBR.log.
    • Attach this log to your next message.

    Now delete the current mbr.log file and then run the below instructions.
    Click Start > Run and copy & paste the following text in the code box into the Run box and then click OK. You must copy and paste or type in this exactly. The quotes must be exactly as shown and there is a space before the -f
    Code:

         "%userprofile%\desktop\mbr.exe" -f

    Now double click on the mbr.exe file and attach the new mbr.log

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip
    * both MBR logs
    * RootRepeal log
    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    You have a Master Boot infections so please let's first try doing this:
    Download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop.

    • Doubleclick the cureit-beta.exe file and allow to run
    • If it prompts you about getting any updates, get the update and then rerun the cureit-beta.exe installation.
    • When it finishes you will have a green window with a Start and and Update selection. Click Start
    • the Express Scan of your PC window will come up. Click OK to scan main memory to detect infected process in memory.
    • If anything is found in memory, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
    • You may see a popup window to Buy or get a discount on the program. Just click the X at the top right to close this popup. The scan will continue.
    • Once the short scan is completed, click the Custom Scan radio button. Then Select each of your hard disk drives (that is if you have more than one). A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
    • Click the green arrow at the right under the Dr.Web logo, and the scan will start.
    • Click 'Yes to all' if it finds any problems and asks if you want to cure or move the file.
    • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
      http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
    • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
      http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/move.gif
    • This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
    • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
    • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
    • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
    • Reboot your computer!! This is necessary because there could be files in use that will be moved or deleted during reboot.
    • After reboot, rename the DrWeb.csv file to DrWeb.txt so that it can be uploaded here and then attach the log from Dr.Web to your next reply

    When done, do the MBR fix again:

    Attach the logs.

    Well.... that didn't work so we need to have you get into the recovery console:

    Boot from the windows XP CD, press the "R" key in the setup in order to start the recoveryconsole. Select your windows XP installation from the list, and enter the administrator password.
    Enter the command: "FIXMBR" (without the quotes) at the input prompt and confirm the next question with a "Y" (without the quotes). Use exit to restore the computer.

    Then once back up in normal mode, do the MBR fix again:
    GMER's MBR.exe

    • Double click on the MBR.exe file to run it.
    • A log will be produced & saved to the desktop, called MBR.log.
    • Attach this log to your next message.
    You couldnt attach it before because it didnt change. Hopefully this one will.

    Ok Tim, I have the recovery console installed so I booted into it from the HD, it gave me the option of logging into two windows installations: C: and D: I have a 2nd copy of Windows on my E drive...

    I selected the C: installation and ran the FIXMBR command. Then I ran MBR.exe The log appears to be the same and will not upload.

    When you ran the mbr.exe the second time back in message # 7, are you sure you used the below exactly as written with the quotes and the -f at the end and was there a space before the -f ?

    "%userprofile%\desktop\mbr.exe" -f

    Did the original Avira scan show something like below?
    Run a new scan with Avira now and attach the new log.

  17. zemba1978

    zemba1978 Private E-2

    I copied and pasted that command into the run window, so it should have been exactly the same.

    Yes the original Avira report did look like that.

    Here are three logs from a new bootsector scan using Avira.

    So the mbr.exe logs were incorrect?

    Correct!

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
