Browser Hijacker and SVCHost faked

    Greetings,

    I have been having issues that I don't know how to resolve. I have my browser being forwarded (sometimes using the options-advanced-connection settings-proxy in FireFox, sometimes not). Scans I run keep coming up with an artificial svchost.exe, but when I clear it out it just comes back.

    I followed the instructions on http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=139681 and am still having problems. I will attach the files as instructed.

    For 64-bit (x64) systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to a flash drive.

    Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

    Enter System Recovery Options.

    To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
    • Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account and click Next.

    To enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:

    • Insert the installation disc.
    • Restart your computer.
    • If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
    • Click Repair your computer.
    • Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account an click Next.
    On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
    • Select Command Prompt
    • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
    • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
    • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
    • In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
    • Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
    • The tool will start to run.
    • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please attach this log to your next reply. (How to attach)

    Boot to System Recovery Options and run FRST again.
    Type the below bolded text in the edit box after "Search:".

    services.exe

    Then click the Search button.

    It will make a log (Search.txt) on the flash drive. Please attach this log to your next reply.

    Services.exe is infected. Yet I cannot find a replacement anywhere on your machine. Hence I asked if you had your disk.

    Let's try this Windows 7 - SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker


    Then run this afterwards so I can see whether it's been addressed or not.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Otherwise all I can think of is a Repair Installation.

    The sfc/ scannow seemed to do something, but it wouldn't let me view the log file it created.

    Attached is fixlist.txt
    • Save fixlist.txt to your flash drive.
    • You should now have both fixlist.txt and FRST64.exe on your flash drive.

    Now re-enter System Recovery Options.
    Run FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
    The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt).

    Now attempt to boot normally.

    Here are all the files, not sure why there are 2 for TDSSKiller.

    Everything seems to be running well and I am no longer getting slowed down or redirected when going to sites. However, I am still getting a "Firefox prevented this page from automatically redirecting to another page." at the top of the page on almost every site.

    Hello. Yes, we must chip away at some more, I noticed a new problem tonight too whilst perusing the logs. We will deal with that shortly.

    Download BFE.reg and MpsSvc.reg to your desktop.

    • Now please click Start, and type regedit into the search box.
    • You should see a regedit.exe and icon appear in the Programs area of the Start Menu.
    • Right click on regedit.exe and select Run As Administrator
    • Then in the Registry Editor menu click File and select Import.
    • Navigate to the BFE.reg file saved to your Desktop and double click it. Allow it to be added to the registry. You should recieve a success message. Repeat this for the MpsSvc.reg file.

    Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

    After reboot, check to see if your firewall is working.

    Run FRST again like you did the first time, no fix, just a scan and attach log.

    Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Still running smooth, and the instructions were easy enough, but still getting the "Firefox prevented this page from automatically redirecting to another page." on most sites.

    To be clear, your Windows Firewall is fully functioning? What about Windows Updates? Is that working or do you get errors at all? :confused

    We are going to be uninstalling your old version of FireFox and installing the new version. So do the below to save bookmarks:

    • Run FireFox and click Bookmarks.
    • Then select Organize Bootmarks.
    • Then on the next window click File and then select Export. Save the bookmarks.html file to your Desktop for later use in importing.
    Now download and save the installer for the current version of FireFox but DO NOT install it yet. Get it here: Mozilla FireFox

    You will need exit FireFox now and use Internet Explorer to continue with the below until we reinstall FireFox.

    Start by uninstalling FireFox (USE REVO Uninstaller!! - see instructions firther down) and then reboot. Do not skip the reboot.
    After reboot, delete the below folders:
    • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    • C:\users\UserAccount\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox

    where UserAccount is the actual user account name being used.

    Now reinstall FireFox from the file previously downloaded.
    Import your bookmarks file. (similar process to exporting).

    Revo Uninstaller Instructions.


    Try Revo Uninstaller.
    Choose the option on the bottom of the list (#4). Be very careful while deleting the bolded registry items ONLY!! This software will create a system restore point for you as well prior to uninstalling a software program.

    Is Firefox behaving normally now?

    Windows Firewall seems ok, I checked again and don't see any issues with it. It asks me if I want to allow games to communicate as normal.

    Windows update has 36 updates and won't let me update them. It is set to update automatically. I get an error 80246008, but the help isn't helpful in resolving the issue.

    Reinstalling FF now.

    Download the below to your dektop.

    BITS.reg

    Yes, those logs look lovely. :) I am satisified you are clean.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
