hey i'm back, but this time i'm helping my mom clean her computer. I've been following the guide but then got stuck because the computer does not allow me to view hidden folders and files. then it can't access the internet explorer so i downloaded the applications on a different computer and sent it over though instant messaging. I've installed them but the computer won't allow them to run. any ideas?

See if the additional notes in the below help.

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

You have to always provide exact word for word error messages. Anything less is a waste of time to post. This may not have anything to do with malware.

The reason I found this significant was because it only happened after I ran combofix. combofix needed to restart the computer to start scanning so I clicked on "yes". But this message came up when it restarted. I couldn't write it down in time because it only gave me 60 seconds before the computer restarted again, but the message was "The DCOM server process terminated unexpectedly." Maybe it has nothing to do with malware but this didn't happen before I ran combofix.

Right now the computer won't even start up. It gets to the blue welcome screen then it turns to a black screen. Safe mode (with networking or command prompt) and all the other options don't work either. They always up with a black screen and blinking underscore at the top left corner.

Are there any other options or does it look like I need to reformat?

Did you try using shutdown -a from the Start, Run box to stop the shutdown?

Well I don't really know for sure because you did not say which Windows Operating System. However if it is Windows XP, the below may get it backup and running.
