While browsing the internet this morning, a window presented
itself with a dialog box warning that my computer was infected.
The underlying window showed a couple of folder graphics where
infections were found and summary stating that 6 viruses were
    found. :(

I immediately closed the window and exited the browser.

    Curent setup:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Opera browser v9.64
(Opera's Fraud Protection was Not active at that time)
PC Tools Firewall Plus v5.0.0.38 - free edition
Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus (up-to-date)
    AntiVir Guard enabled
    Comodo BOClean Anti-Malware v4.27
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I ran three (3) online virus scans:

    ESET (NOD32):
    no threats found

    Trend Micro Housecall:
Two (2) suspicious cookies found and deleted

    BitDefender:
    filename: pk263wsp.exe
    filedate: 03-12-1999
    Detected: TSADBOT.exe

    Info. at: http://siteadvisor.us/sites/textfiles.com/downloads/16570361/

This file was in my download folder.
I think this is an old Windows version of PKZip, which I never used.
    I deleted the file.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After examining my browser history, I found the problem site to be:
    VirusDoctor - Online Protection
    http://scanner.av1-best-click.info/scan.php?campaign=mmb_16368022361&landid=4

    Info. at Norton Safe Web:
    https://safeweb.norton.com/report/show?name=av1-best-click.info

    Info. and removal procedure at:
    http://remove-malware.net/how-to-remove-av1-best-clickinfo-hijacker/
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have not yet downloaded or run this removal tool.

    Please advise.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid addtional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advise that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!!. Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Hello TimW

    Thanks for the reply.

Not sure if I'm actually infected, but will continue with your procedure.

Regarding CCleaner, I'm not really clear about what this means:

Does that mean to Clear the checked boxes on the Applications tab
or simply run 'as is' from default install setup?

There are a few things there that I do not want cleaned,
such as Avira AntiVir, Spybot and Opera history.
(I have Opera set to clear the disk cache and new cookies when the browser
    is closed.)

When verifying the Sun Java installation from within Opera,
if Fails, saying that Java is not installed or not activated
even after remove and reinstall. Java is Enabled in Opera. I did a
repair install of Opera before reinstalling Java.
I have done verification with Opera in the past and it use to work. :confused

The Java installation Does verify from IE 7 and Firefox.
It shows properly in Add / Remove programs.

    I will continue as is.

    Thanks.

The main thing you need to do is to download and run and attach the following scans:
    SAS
    MBAM
    ComboFix
    C:\MGTools.exe --- and attach the C:\MGLogs.zip

Finally finished running the scans. Pretty quick! Not nearly as bad as I had expected.

There was an error message from ComboFix about Avira Antivir still being active, although the Guard was disabled. Previous posts say this is an error and should be ignored.

There was an error message after clicking the Accept button for
HijackThis, but it seems to have run properly.

    Hope all looks good.

    Thanks! :)

    Your logs are clean....:)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Thanks for the help, TimW.
So glad the logs are clean!

Got multiple warnings about NirCmd from PC Tools Firewall, and at least one from Comodo BOClean, while uninstalling ComboFix.

I now have No Sound in any browser: IE 7, Firefox 3, Opera 9.64.

    Media Player works OK.
    Media Player Clssic works OK.

    Re-installed the audio driver.
    Re-installed Opera.
Still no sound in any browser.

Restore points prior to running ComboFix and MG Tools were all wiped out.
Should have had at least a weeks worth - don't know where they went?
I do have a ERUNT backup that I made before running ComboFix and MG Tools on April 17, 2009.
Would it be safe to use that??

    Can you help with this?
How do I get things back to normal.

    Thanks.

You need to address those issues in the software forum. And you don't want to use a backup that could potentially be infected.
