Forgive me if I get this wrong but I'm new to MG

I'm having problems with accessing the following sites for getting updates:-
AVG, Superantispyware, Spywareblaster & MS updates. I get an error message saying the sites cannot be found and also with AVG it says 'Server name cannot be converted to IP Address. I suspect there's some sort of malware stopping/redirecting my attempts at updates.

I've run AVG & Superantispyware before running HJT there were adware files quarentined.

I wonder if some can review the HJT log for me please.

    Thank you

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid addtional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advise that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!!. Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Hi TimW
Sorry about the mistake with the original post.

I've gone thru all of the instructions but still have a problem accessing update sites as mentioned on my first post. The PC I'm trying to fix is an elderly friend's PC and she said she started having problems the w/c 12 Jan. It could be she hadn't noticed before then that AVG wasn't updating.

On the 13 Dec her ISP sent her an email with the following:-
An email addressed to you was intercepted by our mail systems because it contained a known virus. We have deleted the email and the virus so that it poses no threat to your computer.
The name of the virus was Sanesecurity.Malware.9156
The address it appears to have been sent from is bounce@mail.reunion.com

Then a friend sent her an email to say:- If you receive an e mail from Reunion.com which is supposed to be from me, beware. Don't open it. Apparently I have been phished

Whether any of this is related to the problem my friend now has, I don’t know.

    Now the step by step
Please note any software/updates that required accessing software sites as opposed to MG were downloaded from my PC and transferred across on a CD-R. Where the instructions said to get the ‘Recovery Console’ & .NET from Microsoft, I was unable to do that on the affected PC as it can’t access Microsoft Updates.

    SAS ran OK.
Spybot hung & I had to reboot. It ran with no threats found.
Malwarebytes also hung but a re-run showed no infections.
Combofix – When it came to ‘preparing the log report’ I expected the desktop to disappear but the PC rebooted & when starting up SAS started up & a AVG scan kicked in (I’m not sure if this affects the log).

I will post my comments on MGTools with it’s logs.

2nd part to to try & fix Malware problem

MGTools - I got an Error Message Type 4

    *********
I forgot to give you this error on SAS when running the Quarantine process.
The 'progress' bar ran to the end but before the process completed it came up with an error window:-

    Runtime Error!
    Program: c:\Prgoram files\Superantispyware\Superantispyware.exe
    R6025
    - pure virtual call

I clicked OK on the window and the process seems to have run ok & quarantined the file.

I am not seeing any malware in your logs.

Malware detected in email databases has to be cleaned up by you. You have a few choices:

    1. delete the whole file which is not an option you normally want to use
    2. load the email folder that contains the infection and delete ALL unnecessary emails (hoping to remove the problem email) and then use the Mailbox Cleanup option to delete all old emails. Then compact the Outlook database to permanently remove data. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/196990 If you do not cleanup and compact the databases, the deleted emails may still be leaving hidden information in the database that you just cannot see but a scanner may still pickup on it.
    3. create a new folder and move only emails you really need into the new folder and then delete the infected folder.

Part of the problem lies in this:
    Code:
    Total Physical Memory 256.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 78.71 MB

    And you should have uninstalled:
    Viewpoint Media Player

    Let's do this:
    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
o If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    [B]KILLALL::[/B]

    [B]NetSvc::
    xkxvy

[/B] * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

Thank you for your patience :)

I Checked the email, there's an option to 'Delete permanently' the deleted emails. I also went onto Outlook and ran the 'Compact'

    I deleted Viewpoint Media Player.

I've attached the logs files requested

    Thank you

    Hi TimW

In my haste to post a reply with the logs, I hadn't realised my friends PC had updated AVG!! So that seems to have worked. MS updates also kicked in. I tested manual access to the AVG site and that's working OK. :)

Do I need to do anything more to finish off the whole process?

    Best regards

Good to know.......If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
