how to get rid of trojan

1 I have PC and laptop in wireless network under Win XP. Both have used the same online antivirus software [Norman] successfully and with few interventions for several years. In the last week, it has quarantined on the PC a lot of .vbs files, describing them as trojans VBS/SolowBF. Examples are

c:\\windows\08vc0y50131old.vbs
and similar in c:\\windows\system32\***************old.vbs

2 I connected my TomTom via USB to 'infected' PC, switched it on and immediately got a quarantine message from the AVS that another trojan had been picked up.

3 In XP Administrator I have searched 'My Computer' incl hidden files for .vbs files. There were 6 in WIN and WIN\system32 that are ****old.vbs files. The other called pubprn [in blue] in system32 and its dllcache appears to be a valid printer sharing file from Windows. Other .vbs files are in app programs where they may be legitimate at first glance.
This search triggered 'trojan found' messages for the first two ***old.vbs files.

4 Looking at quarantine history, these two **old.vbs files are shown as first detected on Apr 23 and Sep 18 08 respectively. Four more 'bad' files appear on Nov 24 and Dec 8, then more appear late Dec at the time I was downloading updates to the new TomTom, some found in the I drive [the tomtom unit]. So the TomTom has presumably been infected too, which is an extra complication. Later detections are mainly A1966nn.vbs sequentially numbered files in c\system\_restore[**** *]\RP1515 folder which is perhaps the regeneration of more trojans??

All this seems to indicate an infection rather than a Norman idiosyncracy. I've just looked again at the vast range of Trojan Removal products and am completely bamboozled. I saw mention of Simply Super's Trojan Remover which is supposedly capable of removing trojans without the user going into the registry [my kind of product!] but on download.com it only got 3.5 stars. My limited experience of 'spyware removal' stuff like Spybot and Ad-Aware is that they don't get rid of embedded infections.

Can anyone offer considered advice on download products that lead to clean simple disinfection and eradication of trojans?

1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in Safe Mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
3. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

4. Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.
