    Hi. I'm trying to clean my daughter's computer as it seems to be infected with multiple viruses/trojans/malware. I eliminated some of the issues with the Basic Maintenance instructions and the read me files. Here is where I stand now:
    Issues: internet is hijacked when working on google searches, computer stopped recognizing the USB disk key, computer doesn’t recognize anything in the USB drive, computer randomly freezes, it randomly turns screen black, system seems very slow, clicking on icons which previously worked now does not work.

    status:
    1) I downloaded superantispyware to my desk top, but it will not run. Message: “Superantispyware free edition has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.”
    2) MB.exe installed but won’t run. When icon is selected nothing happens.
    3)combofix.exe download failed. Message: "internet explorerer cannot download combofix.exe from download.bleepingcomputer.com. The connection with the server was reset."
    4) SpyBot Search and Destroy worked once then the icon stopped working.
    5) When selecting “Windows update” we get a blank screen.

    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Good morning.

    So it is not yet even installed? I was going to suggest to you to try the Alternate start method (start > all progs > Superantispyware > alternate start) however if you say it will not run when you double click it's set up files, then we will have to try going for a rename.

    1. Now please refer to the below just so we cover all bases:

    2. Rename SuperAntiSpyware.exe to SAS.EXE and see if it will run. Let me know what happens. If you get it to successfully install please then navigate to C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware and again rename the superantispyware.exe to SAS.exe

    3. With regards to the running of ComboFix, is it possible for you to use a clean machine to get a copy of it burnt to CD > transfer to infected machine > and then try and run it. If CF still refuses to run on the sick machine I would like for you to rename it to 123.com and try again to run it.

    4. Also worth mentioning that you could try running all steps in safe mode too.

    5. Do let me know how you got on, because if ComboFix fails to install, we can try using another tool.

    Thanks!
    Kes

    I downloaded and ran Ad-aware Anniversary Edition before I received your reply. It found a trojan: win32trojanalureon. After several attempts, Ad-aware finally eliminated this trojan (I think.) I had to turn off Ad-watch Live, since it caused a scan and reboot in an endless loop.

    I then tried again to download superantiSpyware without success. However, I WAS able to "run" it (instead of saving it) from the download website page and install it on my computer. After several unsuccessful attempts to run it after the installation, I tried the alternate start which worked fine. I have attached the files.

    I was then able to run Malware bytes. log attached. (it seems as though superantispyware broke the log jam.)

    And then I was successful in downloading combofix. log attached.
    fyi: during the execution of combofix, I was asked to download a more recent version. (this was not in the instructions; I hope this was legit as I selected "yes.") also, my system rebooted before the combofix log was created. (this was not in the instructions either.)

    As a side note several files appeared on my desktop while I was following the malware removal guide. (example of file name: AlbumArt_{7C61DC72-2A79-4953-A940-47DD888ADFF9}_Small.jpg) When I try to put it in the re-cycle bin, I am told it is a system file. Should I delete these files anyway? or did they show up when I viewed hidden files.

    Let MBAM update and scan again, fixing anything it finds ... I'll be with you shortly for a fix.

    Good afternoon

    1. The AV you are using, is out of date and you should ensure that you are running the latest version of AVG which is 8.5

    You're using ---> AVG 7.5

    I also see in your uninstall list the following:

    • LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
    • LiveUpdate 2.6 (Symantec Corporation)

    These are remnants from using Norton's/Symantec

    2. Please give the Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) a run > reboot your machine and then run it again for good measure.

    3. Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it
    (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:

    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    Viewpoint Manager Service

    File::
    C:\Windows\system32\UACdwirikji.dll
    C:\Windows\system32\UACijpgvxhp.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\GabrielleL\Local Settings\Temp\ASKSUTBLOG

    Folder::
    C:\Documents and Settings\GabrielleL\Local Settings\Application Data\AskToolbar
    C:\Program Files\Ask.com
    c:\program files\Viewpoint

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3014/3035535531_512f04c6a2_o.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    4. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix

    5. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

    Good evening and thanks for the help.

    1. I purposely didn't upgrade because of the majorgeeks link saying that version 8 is problematic: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525

    "The new AVG8 has been problematic for some people and it also falsely detects as problems, active-X killbit settings that SpywareBlaster and others have added to your registry to protect you."

    Has the recommendation changed?

    2-4) logs attached

    5) The system is running better. the USB port is now active and it is correctly reading disk keys. Google search seems to be working as I haven't experienced a re-direct.

    Any advice on the .jpg files I mentioned below? Can I delete them even though they say system files?

    One more thing of interest: when I booted up tonight, the system couldn't find the wireless connection. I had to "use windows to configure my wireless settings." Why wouldn't "connection manager" within "thinkvantage access connections" work? just wondering if this was related.
    Thanks again for your help.

    You have no choice but to either update or switch anti virus programs as the version you are running now is out of date and unsupported.
    Some infections can impact network connectivity; however the infection you had is not known to do this so it may have been a coincidence.

    The files you asked about are indeed visible because hidden files and folders were set to show when we were running thru the malware removal procedures. You can simply reverse this change by following the instructions in the R&R.

    and your logs are clean! :)

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid addtional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advise that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!!. Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    I see you inserted the instructions for the READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide. Do you want me to run the tools again?

    No! I goobered! :( I apologise for that.. my intention had been to give you final steps which I shall do now, once again, so sorry!

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Kind regards

    Ahh. :)

    Another question before we restore the system:
    After downloading and running AVG 8.5, the scan has discovered the virus- Win32/Cryptor. This is after AVG 7 "healed" it 2 days ago. How can I be sure AVG 8.5 eliminated it this time?
    Thanks,

    only the toggling of system restore will flush away those files, so once that's been done you'll notice avg will no longer detect them :)
