Malware Hides Files

I recently got a virus that made nearly all of my files hidden. It also caused my PC to BSOD in normal mode within a few seconds. I ran MBAM in safe mode and normal mode a couple times and also SAS and they've found a couple things but the speed is still slow and it BSODs from time to time.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Malware cannot be completely removed just by seeing a HijackThis log. If you need our help to remove malware DO NOT simply post a HijackThis log which will be deleted. You must follow the below instructions.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Hello dr. moriarty, I was able to run MBAM, SAS, and MGTools to receive a log but RootRepeal gave me an error 0x00 and would not allow me to run. I ran all of the above in safe mode. Combofix has also not been working because when the blue initialization bar has finished loading, it always gives me a BSOD regardless if I'm in safe mode or not. It also BSODs when I restart the computer like for the completion process of an anti-virus.

    Hello,touchtoplay

RootRepeal does that, sometimes. ;) It's late - I'll review your logs in the morning.

    You're welcome

*Other than the tools our guide instructed you to save there, I strongly recommend that you clean up this account's Desktop immediately leaving only shortcut links. [ C:\Users\Morris\Desktop ] Do not store downloads, exe files, iso files....etc on your Desktop. First it is not a safe place to keep them (i.e., you may loose them due to malware, and a cluttered Desktop is an easy hiding place for malware), and last but not least - it can have an effect on your PCs performance.

Please explain why I see some references to Acronis System Backup - but I don't see it in your "Uninstall Listing".

    Step 1:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features if using Vista or Windows 7) for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and continue on.
Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Step 2:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 3:
Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text inside of the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 4:
Delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    Step 5:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 6:
Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 7:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

    dr.m

Combofix still will not run, when the green loading bar is completed it gives me a BSOD. It states:

"If Parameter1 == 0, an executive worker item was found in memory which must not contain such items. Usually this is memory being freed. This is usually caused by a device driver that has not cleaned up properly before freeing memory.

If Parameter1 == 1, an attempt was made to queue an executive worker item with a usermode exectution routine"

    STOP: 0x000000E4 (0x00000001, 0x80EA7CA8, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

It says this in safe mode also. Also during Getlogs.bat running, it said NTVDM.exe encountered an error and I had to close it. So getlogs.bat only runs in safe mode.

    You didn't respond to this!
Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Step 1:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 2:
Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Right-click OTM.exe and select Run as administrator to run it.
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box

Sorry! Honestly, I don't ever recall installing something called Acronis System Backup on my PC so I don't know why it's on there, but not on my uninstall list.

Right now OTM has stalled and the little loading circle on my cursor has been going on for about 20 minutes now. I am in normal mode, I think I would have better luck if I ran it in safe mode. Should I restart my computer and give it a try?

    Yes, try Safe Mode.

We'll deal with the Acronis System Backup issue in time.

Well I let it sit for a couple more minutes and it BSOD'd on me. I don't know whether it was a process in OTM that caused it or it was just a random one caused by the virus. Now I'm in safe mode and it's done it again, except this time the cursor isn't indicating that it's loading anything. The program won't respond when I click on it though.

Let's see if this online scan can remove enough for us to continue.

    Using ESET's Online Scanner

Attach the ESET Log.txt to your next reply.

I looked over the ESET log and it doesn't look like it found or deleted anything related to this infection unfortunately.

Please download and run the below tool named iExplore.exe(courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run. *Save it to your desktop.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Administrator

    iExplore.exe

Once you've gotten it to run then try to immediately run the following without rebooting.

Now download and Run exeHelper from Raktor
    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
    • Attach the log.txt file to your next message.
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

If you already have them installed, be sure to update Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware before the scan!

Now run this: Using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Then run this: SUPERAntiSpyware - running & getting a log

*Try now to run the instructions I gave in my post #8 !

Now you need to attach (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post ) the below logs created while running the above scans
    • exeHelper log
    • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log
    • SUPERAntiSpyware log
    • MGlogs.zip

    NOTE:
    1. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. Yes, you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

You can close this thread now, I decided to back up all my files and reinstall my OS. Having a trojan on my PC that couldn't be detected by log files was not worth fixing because of high risks in the long run. Thank you for all your time and help.
