    For about a month, My computer started slowing and IE7 was really slow and freezing, so I decided to update to IE8. AFter installing and trying to open, rec'd error message about an Add-on program not being compatible, so I checked "Always open without". From the very start, IE8 would freeze up with white screen, and very few times would it connect to the internet, or even give me the "cannot connect" message, just froze. All of my programs started freezing, I could not do anything. I ran PCTools scan with no results, then i ran Spybot Search and Destroy and it found Virtumonde & AdawareAlert. I chose to remove, and indicated that is was removed.(Now the past log does not mention Virtumonde) This did not help with programs, so I decided to do a system restore.All of the programs are running fine, IE is connecting to the internet, I have no idea what version, as there are no tool bars. Only the address bar with: < > address bar, refresh, X, and Google search bar at the far right with a Magnifying glass. NO Menu bar, NO status Bar, nothing except that on strip. I can't right click anywhere in the bar, or the body of the window to try and reset toolbar options.I cannot download anyting, or even attach a file in my Yahoo email?? I cannot copy and paste, and my Delete button does not work, (works in all other programs). I have been working between my Laptop and a Thumbdrive to get all Read and Run me programs ran and logs. I have completed all and the logs are attached here. I could put IE8 on the thumb drive and try to reinstall it, but i am scared? I have also ran PCTools Antivirus Scan again also, and it has not found anything, I have looked back through the logs and there is not mention of Virtumonde...Please help!!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

    READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!

    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

    Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Thanx for your time!!! I see that the logs did not attach from Friday. I had attempted to attach the logs Friday before I left to go out of town, and it appears they did not. Hopefully they will be there this time.

    The only steps that I could not run was this 1:

    1.) “Uninstall Old Sun Java versions…..”
    When I attempted to uninstall, I rec’d error message
    Sun Microsytems Inc., Java™ 6 update 6-Internal error 2318 c\windows\system32\java.exe – Fatal Error during installation

    Update on the computer status:
    I turned on computer when I got home from the weekend, and IE was connecting, but still with no tool bars. Then after a few minutes, it started freezing up, along with all my programs, and closing. Now it will not open at all. I click on the icon, it flashes something, then disappears.
    I also ran these programs last night and today:
    1.) Stinger.Exe
    2.) PCTools scan
    3.) Malwarebytes “again" but couldn't attach log, only 4 attachments allowed.

    ?? - I have an icon for windows messenger in system tray, but it does not appear in Add/Remove Programs, or anywhere else. I have tried right clicking and exiting, but it still keeps appearing.

    Really
    appreciate you guys, I can always depend on finding solutions, and getting advice that I can trust. Most of the time I can solve little issues by searching and reading, so that I don’t have to post a new one. Sometimes I just can’t locate any posts that relate to my issues.

    The SAS log that you attached is empty. The other scans appear to have taken care of most of it....there is one thing we need to deal with.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    xzdux

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\xzdux.sys

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Sorry about the SAS File, I do not know what happened, I have reattached it. I tried scrolling in the box, but all I have for creating the CFscript.txt is:

    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    xzdux

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\xzdux.sys

    When the computer ComboFix rebooted my computer. Comodo Firewall kept giving me error messages about programs trying to access memory - catchme ?? Then ComboFix's window stated "Access Denied".
    I did a screen shot and will attempt to attach it also.

    So I set Comodo not to start with Windows and ran ComboFix again.

    I attempted to attache the MGlogs.zip file, and it stated that I had already attached that and would not let me.

    I really appreciate your patience, lord only knows you must have LOTSA patience.
    Thanx

    Sorry, forgot SAS file again.... I am working with my Laptop that is connected to the internet, and my Desktop with a thumb drive. I ran it again this afternoon thinking that the file was blank, but realized what had happened.When I copied the logs to my laptop from the thumb drive, they were blank? so I just attached them directly from the thumb drive this time. :(((((((

    ?? What should I do?

    That means you are trying to attach the same log and not a new log......run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This will over write your existing MGLogs. You can then attach that.

    I am not seeing any malware in your logs.......If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Do you have the issue with any other browser?

    Please try doing this Gooredfix.

    I don't have any other browser. Are you saying that I need to change to another browser?

    I am indeed saying that. I would suggest you install FireFox and see if the problems persist. That way we can help to narrow down the issue, which is beginning to look like a software problem. The link I gave you is not just for FireFox...it is also for IE> so please run it and attach a log.

    I did install Firefox, and I am now able to get online!! What the Heck?!? I have always used IE, I have tried Firefox but could never get my old list of favorites from IE. Will I have to use Firefox now? Is my system clean and I should have no concern?
    Thanx!!!!

    I would suggest that you totally uninstall IE....run CCLeaner (both the cleaner and the registry - making sure you do the backup when prompted) and then re-install IE. This is a software issue at this point, so I suggest you post in that forum. :)
