    Hello,

I attempted to run the R&R in order to provide logs, but failed due to the infection. I can tell you what it is doing to my PC and will follow all instructions you offer.

Each step I took that involved running a scan would end with the program doing the scan being killed as if the process had been stopped. On top of that the program in question would no longer run on the PC until it was reinstalled, and of course killed again shortly after starting the scan. The error message was something along the lines of cannot access the file or do not have permission. There is only one user account and no log on screen, so anyone using the PC has full rights. The PC is used by my sister and her children. It has of course had problems in the past but nothing the R&R couldn't fix, and thankfully it doesn't happen very often. Kaspersky internet AV was used until the key ran out a couple weeks ago and I have not been able to get a new key yet, so of course we get the annoying pop up saying to renew and my sister turns off kaspersky so the message stops. As often as I tell her to just deal with it so the PC is protected she doesn't listen. Maybe this will teach her? Sorry to get off topic, I am trying to be as honest and thorough as I can along with a little frustration due to spending my entire night attempting to fix the problem only to find her using the PC this morning even though I had shut it down. Kaspersky, by the way, has been killed twice now as well by this infection. I actually tried using panda online scanner and the infection killed firefox itself. I reinstalled firefox and it seems to work fine, other than the redirect. Along with the redirect I notice one instance of svchost.exe grows and grows as far as memory usage and has got well into the 1 gig range by which time the PC is so slow you have to use the reset button to restart the PC. I allowed this to happen twice for the sake of making sure it wasn't a fluke the first time. After that I have killed the process as soon as I see it get past 60Kb. During the SAS scan it finds 2 instances of svchost-fake before it is killed. It finds it during the first stage which I believe is a memory scan. I use the version that can be ran from a USB thumb-drive so I can probably get a screen shot but no log.

The system in question is running windows XP home edition with 2 gigs of ram. It runs fine besides the redirect as long as you kill the svchost.exe once it starts growing. I should mention that as soon as it is killed a new instance starts with "0" delay. I ran Rkill and even though it claims to have stopped it the instance that grows does not get terminated I still have to do it myself. Although I can produce a log for Rkill. MBAM didn't make it very long before it got killed, maybe 20-30 seconds so no log for that either. I did not try to run combofix because of the pattern of scans being killed so quickly. I want to make sure I will be able to run it when you tell me to. I tried running root repeal and it froze the system. I did not try a second time. When I ran Ccleaner it ran the cleaning procedure fine but because it was one of the first things I ran before knowing what this infection was doing I tried running the registry scan and it got killed as well. I am not sure if java is up to date as it was not in the front of my thoughts after discovering how nasty this infection is. I did set the system to normal startup at the beginning of all this. I believe my sister tried installing stopzilla but it wouldn't start when she tried to use it.

I will make sure nothing else is installed from here on, but I can't promise she won't use the PC between now and when I get a reply. She is addicted to facebook games and because I am simply her brother I can't possibly know what I'm talking about when I tell her to stop using the PC until we get it fixed.

Thanks in advance for the help, this one has me stumped.

Download the latest version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. See if you can run the exe and get a C:\MGLogs.zip.

Here is the MGlog.zip and also a screen shot of an error that occurred. Normally I wouldn't include anything not asked for but I want to make sure I share all information for this one. The scan did complete after clicking on OK.

Since Kaspersky is no longer up to date, I suggest you uninstall it and download and install Microsoft Security Essentials.

Now, download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif

    1. Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    2. Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    3. Click OK at the warning to continue to use The Avenger
    4. Do not change any of the check box options!
    5. Shut down your protection software now to avoid possible conflicts.
    6. Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of The Avenger
    7. Now click the http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/9159/executeavenger.jpg button
    8. Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    9. Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when The Avenger finishes running.
    10. Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    11. A log file from The Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will pop-up for you to view when you login after reboot.
    12. Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

The one instance svchost.exe is still growing randomly. Other than that I ca't really say that anything else is wrong. the 2 files you asked for are attached.

You still have not uninstalled Kaspersky or installed MSE.

Please do this now and allow MSE to do a scan.

Use windows explorer to find and then right click / properties and tell me what these are:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\82DA.754

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\1040199637

If you don't know, delete them.

I tried to uninstall Kaspersky but it gave me an:

    error1402. Could not ope key.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWSNT\CURRENT VERSION\WINLOGON\NOTIFY\KLOGON.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

After getting your reply I tried uninstalling Kaspersky and got the above error and it suggested that I restart and reinstall to fix the problem. Instead of restarting I installed MSE. When MSE did not work I sent the 2 logs you asked for. On restart I attempted to re-install Kaspersky in order to complete the uninstall. Which of course uninstalled MSE. And I got the same error as mentioned above once again. I then re-installed MSE and attempted to run it, which gave me another error and I took a screen shot of it which is attached to this reply. After all that I found the 2 files you asked me to look for and because I did not recognize what they are for I deleted them. They should still be in the recycle bin if you wanted me to tell you anything specific about them.

Here are the steps I took after your most recent reply:

I ran avenger with your script and restarted the computer. log is attached to this post as requested.

I then tried to run MSE but got the same error as in the last post <0X80070005> I tried uninstalling MSE restarted the computer and re-installed MSE updated it and tried again still with the same error.

I then ran the getlogs.bat file. log is attached to this post as requested.

I have noticed that the svchost.exe file has not grown above 43k though so something has changed. Also the computer will not restart without hitting the reset button at all anymore. it goes through the shutdown process and the screen goes black then the monitor loses signal, but will not finish the restart cycle. These are new symptoms or at least ones that did not show themselves from when we first started this thread.

Please download combofix.exe to your desktop, but do not run it yet.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    Kaspersky Anti-Virus
    AVP
    File::
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 Keys [ChattChitto RG]
    C:\PROGRA~1\KASPER~1\KASPER~1\kloehk.dll
    Folder::
    C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
    "AppInit_DLLs"=""

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now see if you can run MSE.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

When I tried to run the analyser I found it had already been killed somehow and gave me the error of not able to be found or not enough permission the same as all other programs to have been killed by the infection. So I ran the version I have installed already and it was killed after about 2 seconds. So I ran combofix without the script you asked me to use. That was actually a mistake due to frustration and I apologize for that, but it did complete and allow me to re-install and run hijackthis. of the 4 lines you wanted me to find only 1 of them was left (the 023 line) according to hijackthis so i checked it and clicked on the fix button. I then ran combofix again but this time with the script. The computer actually restarted on its own without me having to hit the reset button. Sadly MSE still will not run. Attached is the MGlogs.zip and both combofixlogs which are numbered 1 and 2. CFlog1.txt being the version ran without the script.

I did not try to uninstall and reinstall MSE before writing this as I am short on time. But I will attempt it later tomorrow.

Thank you for all the help so far even though it seems to be a very slow process. Also I'm sorry I ran combofix without the script the first time, it's just frustrating when the things you ask me to do get killed or won't work because of the infection.

The thing is, I am not really finding any malware in your logs.

Let's continue to try to remove Kaspersky and also MSE. MSE should uninstall fairly easily, but I want you to try running these procedures to remove Kaspersky:
    http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208279463

Now let's see if we can't get an AV program to run on your system. Let's have you download and install Avira.

Tell me how that goes. If it installes, run the AV and tell me if it finds anything.

You can also then try running an online scan:
    eSet Online Scan.

    Next:
Go to the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky

Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

After replying to you last night and coming back home I uninstalled MSE and reinstalled it. I was having internet connectivity issues on this PC so I had to manually download the update file, but after that ran, MSE was operational and I ran a full scan. Of course that took hours so I went to bed and checked it today around 2PM EST. I then ran a quick scan, which also completed. I had things to do though so I was unable to reply at that time. I have no idea were the log file is for MSE so I took a screen shot of the history page to show you what it found. I downloaded TDSSKILLER and ran it, log attached. I also ran the MBRcheck, log attached.
It seems that ever since running combofix without the script I have been able to get scans to work again. Of course there were issues found both with and without the script because as I said I ran it twice, then more issues found by MSE when it ran last night. I am going to unistall and reinstall SAS and MBAM after sending this but I will not run them until you tell me the next steps. I have also included a getlogs.bat file just to be extra thorough, not sure if it was needed. If you tell me were to find the logs for MSE I will gladly send them.

By the way, when I ran the getlogs.bat last night it completed without the error for the first time since you started helping me. Meaning that it has been reporting the same error every time you asked me to run it, except last night and then today. So I am thinking combofix got rid of the major problem. I still want to continue this until you tell me we are done though.

Your logs are clean. But it would still be a good idea to re-run both SAS and MBAM.

There are still indications of Kaspersky on your system.

Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now remove this item from your desktop:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 Keys [ChattChitto RG]

Tell me how things are running now.

Analyser still gave me the can't find or not sufficient permission error. Like I said, when the infection killed a scan it corrupted the file somehow so that it needed to be deleted and reinstalled for it to work again. So I deleted the entire MGtools folder and re-ran MGtools from the root directory in order to get a fresh folder. After doing that analyser worked again but none of the items you asked me to find and fix were in the list. So I started wondering if I could possibly have been sending you the same file repeatedly so you were seeing the same information? I deleted the MGlogs.zip and will run getlogs.bat after running SAS and MBAM. Everything seems to be working fine for now. It seems that I should have ran combofix before writing in for help. Although it has been 3 years since this computer has been properly gone over anyway so I don't mind taking the time to do this. I will post the logs from SAS Mbam and getlogs.bat in about 2 hours when the scans are done. I almost forgot. the "regedit4" script succeeded.

Not a problem. As long as things are running well, and after we look at your new logs, we can probably put this thread to rest. ;)

here are the logs from SAS, MBAM, and getlogs.bat
Mbam found trojanpatcher located in a file called cdrom.sys. I told it to fix it before I really had a chance to read it and only caught it after clicking the button, but since everything seems to be ok with my cd/dvd drives I guess nothing got broke...

Your logs look good, though we can clean up a few leftover things:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

regedit4 was successful. HJT found all mentioned lines which I checked and fixed. followed removal procedures and reactivated system restore. Thanks again for the help!

Your mention of malware removal pricing is a bit off for Michigan, which is where I'm from. "IF" a place will even bother to take the time to remove malware it costs upward of $200. They tend to use methods similar if not directly from your site and if that fails they tell you to re-install yet still charge you. I have been using your site for a long time now and thankfully do not need to ask for help very often, I am glad you guys are around when I finally do need the help. Is MSE good enough to protect the PC compared to kaspersky or nod32? As soon as I can afford it I am either renweing kaspersky or trying nod32 unless MSE is good enough for web browsing and constant facebooking/games. Sisters habit, not mine...

  20. TimW

My pricing quote was specifically for one nationally known site. LOL

You can rely on MSE for protection, but MG's is giving away a pro key for Iobit Malware fighter which you might want to add to the arsenal. See the post in the software forum and ask Tim for a key. ;)
