Hello, I have an issue with an older Gateway laptop running XP home. I wish I could just do a full reload but my wife would kill me. Not so much of an option on my part. So I need to clean it up, your guide to clean seems like it would work great for me, except each time I try one of the programs it stops running and shuts off. if I do nothing the laptop stays on no problem. if I try other programs they run but are slow and not all functions work. I do have an AVG virus vault list and it says vundo.co, vundo.cn, Generic12.ACIN and around 135 other trojan horse files. I just want to keep it running to preform a full set of scans, oh, and it shutdown even in safe mode. so yeah I tried to do all of this in safe mode as well. Any thoughts?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions. If your PC is still shutting down, it may be an over heating problem. But no matter what happens, try all steps scans as stated.
    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Ok the issue is not over heating - I can run an old version of KNOPPIX [3.3] to get into the unit - this version or my level of KNOPPIX knowledge will not let me burn off the data so I can do a full reload of the XP Home OS. The laptop was left on in KNOPPIX all night, with no adverse problems. I was in the process of getting setup to run the Read & Run me first items when it started the endless loop of restarts.

Unless your PC is bootable, there is nothing we can do for you in the Malware Removal Forum. How long does your PC stay up for if you boot to Windows? How far into the READ & RUN ME did you get.

You would probably be better off posting in the Software Forum to a continue working on this unless you can get us some logs. Even the MGtools log which does run reasonably fast would be better than no logs at all.

I finally got knoppix to a CD and ran that program to get my info off and I just reloaded XP Home.

It would not stay up at all, just kept goning into the restart mode.

Are you saying this is still happening after you have reinstalled or are you saying this is why you reinstalled?

Sorry - no - everything is fine now. The laptop did have an overheating, might still, but it is better once I cleaned the fan and replaced the battery. All is well in the Shutdown world. Thanks for offering a sounding board.
