My mom's laptop is infected with something that causes Google searches to bring up nothing but ad sites. As far as I can tell, it's something called Virus Bursters? How can I go about removing this?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Please take note of what the scans removed....esp. look in the Combo log.

Your logs are clean but we can do some additional cleanup:

Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Now download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

When that is finished, run CCleaner --> both the cleaner and the issues ( making sure you do the backup when prompted).

Let me know how things are running.

No such luck. The computer seems to be clean except for this problem with Google. It's pulling up websites like lowpriceshopper.com, shopica.com, find-more-here.com instead of the normal websites that show up first on a search, like Wikipedia, but this is only on Google, and not on other search engines like Yahoo.

What browser are you using? Does this happen in safe mode? Does it happen if you use a different browser?

She normally uses Firefox, but I checked Internet Explorer as well, and checked both browsers in normal and safe mode. None of them were clean, even though the safe mode browsers hadn't been used yet (both asked to be made defaults).

Both browsers give you the redirects when using Google? Are you searching from a Google toolbar or are you actually typing in google in the address bar inorder to do a search?

Google is set as the homepage, so it does happen both from the toolbar and from the actual site. I browsed a few other sites and then manually went to Google, just to be sure, but the problem is still there.

Please follow the instructions HERE and then run Spybot and attach that log.

I'm having a bit of trouble with the Spybot business. I've run Immunize, but I can't find the appropriate buttons for Step 5, the permanent blocking. As well, after running the scan, I can't find a way to save a log for posting. I'm using the latest version of Spybot, is there something I'm missing?

    Just follow our instructions HERE.

Here's the log, but I still can't find a way to enable permanent blocking. The screen looks exactly the same after the immunization is run, top to bottom, as it does before the green + Immunize button is clicked. There are 30307 unprotected parts, all in Firefox (cookies, images, installations and pop-ups) that Spybot can't protect.

    Spybot found nothing.

I want you to do this:
Remove all toolbars and add-ons in IE. (Install IE7 if you have not already.)
    Uninstall FireFox.

Run CCleaner ( both the cleaner and the issues - make the backup when prompted).

    Reboot.
    Install FireFox

Do you still have the issues?

    The problem's still there.

Give me a screen shot of the problem if you would. Perhaps we need to add those urls to your host file.
