    Hi

    There is a problem with my internet connection. I use tiscali, and the thompson modem has began to make a series of continuous beeps. An icon appears on the bottom right hand corner indicating to me that there was a problem installing new hardware, howerer I've been using this bleeding modem for about a year.

    On starting the computer I attempted to go into 'command prompt' but a blue screen comes up, telling that there may be virus's on the hard-drive. I was going to attempt to delete files on my directory, as advised in another post I read.

    So I suppose I'm facing 2 problems that certainly overlap
    1. Failed internet connection.
    2. Virus's on my hard-drive.

    I cant use safemode either, and therefore cant update any malware application I have.

    I'm stuck on this one.

    Any suggestions

    I use a dell laptop with winXP SP2

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    If you feel this is a malware issue, please do the following;

    Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First. If TDSSserv is not found, just continue on with the READ & RUN ME.
    READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

    Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Hi Tim

    I have no internet connection, therefore cant update any malware.
    I can't use safemode with networking either, this option leads me back to the blue screen that indicates I have a virus.

    There may be a problem with the drivers, so I will try the TDS.Sserv.sys step, or I might create another account, and try and get in that way.
    Or I could try re-installing the modem.

    Is there any other options?

  4. TimW

    TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

    Yes, the other option is to download the scan tools to another pc and transfer via CD. Unless you are telling me that you can't get into windows at all.

    Hi

    Is it possible to put all these programs on a disk, updated and all? Cos I cant get internet connection on the computer in question. Therefore wont be able to update the programs fully, if in-deed it is required.

    It will be news to me if this is the case!

    That is exactly what I suggested you do. Download to a different computer, save to cd and then transfer to the infected computer and run the exe's.

    Hi

    Here are the logs I gathered. Found 4 infections altogether. Not much. Still no internet after removal.

    Thanks

    Where are the other requested logs:
    SAS
    ComboFix

    Did you have a problem running those? If so what happened?

    You attached the MGLog.txt....not the C:\MGLog.zip.

    You would have had an answer two days ago if you hadn't bumped your thread.

    Your system is in need of 4x the amount of ram it has:
    Total Physical Memory 256.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 43.12 MB

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    SROSA

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
    "?"=-
    "/"=-
    "."=-
    " "=-

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SROSA]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SROSA]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SROSA]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SROSA\0000]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SROSA\0000\LogConf]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

    Now clean out both these folders:
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
    C:\Documents and Settings\Damian Greene\Local Settings\Temp\

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Hi

    Worked through the steps, alittle bother here and there. Combofix seemed to flicker from time to time, to a black screen then back again. So it never seemed to make any progress after about an hour or so. I restarted the computer, and then it worked fine. Ran CCleaner, hopefully cleaned the files you specified -- the Windows/Temp/ file still contained files however when I looked.

    Hope you have what is required.

    Thanks

    We are going to try one more time to remove the bagle infection before we have to use a tool.

    Please download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Avenger didn't run.....did you copy everything in the quote box ( and not any space above the first line)?

    I don't know if this has worked this time, but I got the following Logs.

    It wouldn't run the way it had been pasted into the window, so I needed to press return on the keyboard after 'drivers to delete:' so it looked like:

    Drivers to delete:
    srosa Registry Keys to delete:HKey....... {etc} in one stright line

    Hope this makes some sense
    Thanx

    No....it has to be exactly as I wrote it.

    Let's use Combo.

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SROSA\0000]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SROSA\0000\LogConf 			 		]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.

    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Hi Tim

    Couldn't update combofix, with no internet connection. I Followed your instructions, using combofix out of date. The computer crashed whilst rebooting. I allowed cf to finish , (was surprised it actually finished) and got the attached logs.

    I have a new version of combofix ready on another disk if it might be required.

    Thanx

    You need the current version to get the last fix TimW gave you to work. As you can see from your last log, the outdated version ran in Reduced Functionality Mode which means it did not work properly. You need the current version and you need to redo the whole last fix TimW gave you.

    Hey guys,

    I cant find the ComboFix program to delete it. Its not on program list in the control panel, and its not listed in the uninstall part of CCleanner.

    Don't you think it strange?

    Anyhow, I dont want the 'new version' to conflict with the old version. I even looked on the C:/Program Files list. It Aint there man, if this is a program, it should be somewhere for me to delete it!

  21. chaslang

    No! Because it does not run an installer just like MGtools.

    It is not supposed to be there. It is just supposed to be on your Desktop.

    Hi

    Deleted the old ComboFix on my desktop, and installed and ran the new version.

    Now my computer it seems is stuck in limbo, all I get is a blank screen.

    After cf ran, it said a log has been created at C:/Combofix.txt, then it showed me the log. I minimised the log, and the blank screen that appeared, comes up everytime I switch off/on the computer.

    How common is this, and is there a way I can get my desktop back?

    Thanx

    Hey

    Apologies for bumping in, but my last post did not have anything constructive to say.

    Anyway, thaks very much for your support so far.

    I got my computer started again with a boot disk, and have attached the logs.

    I dont think cf solved the srosa problem though, but judge the logs for yourself

    Thanks again

    The only thing that needs attention is this:

    Please use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\iyewgkkl.txt

    Let me remind you again that you are in desperate need of more ram as well as the lack of hard drive room left.

    Total Physical Memory 256.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 41.48 MB

    Size 34.49 GB (37,030,207,488 bytes)
    Free Space 1.87 GB (2,006,306,816 bytes)

    Tell me what issues you still may be having.

    Hi

    I still cant get the internet working, perhaps this is due to the lack of physical memory. Are there any suggestions on restoring this physical memory? Could this be restored if I make more room available on the hard-drive.

    Its a laptop, so the option of purhasing more physical Ram may not be a choice.

  26. TimW

    TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

    You can not "restore" physical memory. You either have it or you don't. You might try running SAS again and going to preferences / repairs and scroll down to repair broken network connection.

    As to upgrading your system, you only need to go to crucial.com and do a scan of the system to see how much your computer will allow to be installed.

    You should post in the software forum for that issue.

    Run the C:\MGtools\ShowNew.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    and let me see if there are any other malware issues remaining.

    Hi

    SAS didn't work, and my internet connection is still broke. The only other problem I seem to be having is when I minimize a window, my icons on the desktop flicker afew times before normalising. I cant imagine this being a normal procedure for XP, so could it be having a lack of physical memory thats doing this.

    Anyhow, here are the logs requested.

    Thanx

    Your logs are clean. Whatever issues you may still have should be addressed in either the software or networking forums.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
