I have been experiencing wierd lag on CSS very recently and I have noticed that there are a lot of processes utilizing my network connection and accessing my hard drive. I am not sure if this is related to the lag issues I have been having but i think it might be. I run vista 64 -- could it be related to the indexing services of vista? Or it could be malicious software, which is why I have included this hijak this log:

Is there anything out of the ordinary here?

    Thank you.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifWelcome! to MajorGeeks.com!http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given further down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in Safe Mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
    4. Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Just read that post.

Note: stickies are unlikely to be read by first time users.

I went over the info in there and my log looks clean. I will search for other issues that might cause the lag.

Exactly, however in order to receive help in this forum they must be read and followed. The day everyone realizes they are there to help them, the less time we'll waste requesting them go back and read and follow them.

It doesn't sound to be malware related however to rule out malware I would suggest running the steps and attaching the logs.

Well; Perhaps you can give me advice on my next leading theory.

I am an advanced computer user so I keep a very clean computer anyways; I would honestly be shocked if I had any malware on my computer in the first place. The notion that it could be related to malware was a last resort...

I actually think that my hard drive is dieing and causing the lag I experience. About two months ago it started making a very quiet buzzing noise; you can only hear it in a quiet room. The sound isn't alarming enough to cause imediate alarm and I'm not worried about any data to back up; I don't have anything important to save.

There have been other tell-tale signs of hard drive failure though. On occasion it takes a long time to open directories on that hard drive; and running a search on that drive can take a very long time even though it is indexed by windows vista.

What do you think; could the issues with lag be related to a dieing hard drive that has occasional, very long, access times?

Yes, a failing HDD can cause poor performace however a failing motherboard & power supply can also cause the same symptoms. My personal desktop computer had the same issue and I've replaced two HDD's because of the same issue and it wasn't the HDD.

I don't suspect a failing motherboard. It's a consumer laptop (5 mo old) that I have replaced the HDD's in. (Asus M70sa X2) However; if you know any ways to diagnose a failing mobo in a consumer laptop, I would be glad to hear them.

Although now that I think of it my lag issues have come up after my laptop fell off a table once (it was off) and cracked the plastic on the corner by the hinge. Everything still worked fine so I have not had it repaired (However i will on accidental damage insurance towards the end of my one year coverage).

I wonder if falling could have damaged it and be causing the lag; but it seems that if it were damaged I would notice problems in areas other than CSS...

I will try installing CSS on the other hard drive tomorrow and see if the lag stops as a definitive test.

If you have any other ideas I will be glad to hear them.

To my knowledge there are no easy tests for failing motherboards. If you're pretty confident this isn't malware related which it doesn't sound like it to me then I would recommend the Hardware or Software Forum. Those guy may know some more things to try.

    Good Luck!:major
