Long story so ill give a quick summary.
My gfriends pc wouldnt connect to the net. the router was ok and the pc was detecting it and said connected 100mbps but int explorer couldnt connect to it. even the 192.16 etc. I tried everything scans etc but nothing so i restored windows ( XP home ed) to the day it was bought. after much pain i managed to get the internet back on but now Media player wont work. I updated everything i could think of (windows update etc) but when i updated to MP 11 I got an error message. I cant remember the exact message but it was something like" DRM migrate.exe has encountered a problem". I clicked ok to continue and it finished the installation but when its opened if you try and use it it freezes and cant be switched off. ive tried rolling it back and re-installing it but get errors every time.
P.S I ran scans with MG tools, combofix etc, as advised on MG, as i suspected the original problem might be a virus. Cant remember the name of the first scanner but it found 11 problems (nothing i recognised as serious) Combofix wouldnt run, so i continued as advised. after i ran MGtools i was able to scan with Combofix (dont have the logs to hand, will add later if needed) I restarted the pc and re scanned it ( nothing found ) but Media player still wont work. Thanks for reading.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME ) onto another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes, you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
    4. Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Thats the procedure i followed initially. but afterwards i could only find one log. I searched the exact locations it told me to and both hard drives but came up blank. could this be caused by malware?

couldnt attach the combo fix log because the application wouldnt open. It said "32788r22fwjfw\n.com cannot access the specified device path or file . also "32788r22fwjfw\hideg.exe"
tried using combofix again after all the scans were done but it didnt work, same problem. there is the first combofix scan log in my earlier message

Ive followed the cleaning procedure. I dont believe it found anything but ill wait for someone who knows what theyre talking about to look lol. In a fit of frustration i did a complete clean install then windows and microsoft update. i deliberately didnt update any drivers then i updated Media Player. It Works ! Praise the Lord!. some of the music files i backed up wouldnt copy back to media player, said they were incomplete or corrupt. Just waiting to see what the diagnosis is on the logs and hopefully Its fixed permanently. A BIG! hand to all those who helped. WHAT A SITE!

    Hello, obugger

Exactly when did you do the clean install --- before or after the scans were ran?

I reinstalled windows AFTER the scans. I realise that any virus might still be present but girlfriends arent known for their patience lol. Hopefully the logs will show nothing and ill be happy. Heres hoping

    :)

Reformatting erases everything on the hard drive. If the application .exes and personal data that you re-loaded were malware free - your machine should be clean, with the rare exception of a boot sector virus having been present; which I didn't see signs of in your logs.

Sorry might not have made that very clear. I didnt format the drive, I just re installed windows and chose the option not to save any files.

thought i should add that this is an OEM version of windows xp. so formatting wasnt really an option

Performing a clean install you will have a virus/spyware free OS; provided that what you re-loaded afterwards was not infected. If you wish me to verify your machine is clean, then re-run the R&R Me First guide and attach the requested logs.
