    Hi there,
My ASUS Eee PC laptop recently downloaded a program called WinPC, which I understand is a virus!

I can't open MalwareBytes! AVG found nothing. Superanti Spyware found a threat called 'rogue antivirus 2009', so i removed it and rebooted my laptop...unfortunately the virus is still there...and now Superanti spyware won't open either.

    I am seriously stuck.

    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First. If TDSSserv is not found, just continue on with the READ & RUN ME.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Hi there
Thanks for the reply :) Much appreciated.

Okay so some things to note from the things I had to do:
Didn't find any of the Malware programs in add/remove programs.
Installed the new java, and removed the old updates.
Downloaded each program, however, could not run any of them apart from MGtools

So the log for the MGtools are attached.

    Thanks!!

    You're welcome.

Why? Please explain exactly what happens? Did you try safe boot mode? Did you check for the TDSSserv item? Did you shutdown AVG8 while trying to run them? Attach the below log from SUPERAntiSpyware that you ran on May 18th.
    Code:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Meags\Application Data\SUPERAntiSpyware.com\SUPERAntiSpyware\Logs\
    18 May 2009 6870 "SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log - 05-18-2009 - 20-17-53.log"

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now see if you can run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and ComboFix.

If you still cannot run the other tools, run full scans with a-squared and AVG and attach logs from them.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the May 18th log from SUPERAntiSpyware
    • logs from any other scanners you could run.
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Okay. So did all the next steps.

So firstly, tried to run Malawarebytes, Superantispyware and Combo Fix, in safe mode, still no luck. Closed AVG8 too.

What happens is, I click to open them. The egg time comes up on the mouse for approx. 10 seconds, then it goes away...and nothing opens.

    Ran Avenger. Log is attached.
Ran CCleaner. Still could not open Malwarebytes, Superantispyware and Combo Fix.

A-Squared was a trial that ran out. So I shall remove that from my computer?

Did a scan with AVG8! Rememeber how I said when I did an initial scan it didn't find anything! NOW IT FOUND 18 THREATS! I am not sure where the log is saved. So I saved some overview file, so I'll attach that. It said that it removed 8, but 7 were still there.

I restarted my computer. And no Anti-Virus 2009 is coming up :) The icon that appeared for WinPC near the time has now gone. However, there is still a shortcut to WinPC on my desktop and I still can't run MalawareBytes, Super Antispyware and Combo Fix :confused

    Regards,
    Meagan.

You have a VERY old version of SUPRAntiSpyware (indicated by the log). You are running 3.9, we are at version 4.26.1004 now. Did you try a new download of SUPERAntiSpyware, renaming SUPERAntiSpyware.exe to SAS.EXE and then using the RUNSAS.EXE (Alternate Start) in the SUPERAntiSpyware menu under Programs?

Okay. So I downloaded the latest ones from the linkes provided on this forum. And it downloaded, installed and I was able to run a scan on Superantispyware and weirdly, it found nothing. Log is attached.

The status of the virus is still the same, not visible but definiately still in there because AVG found threats today for it, I'll attach that log and sometimes it hijacks my webpage and takes me to some 'computer scanner' website, or a few others.

    Thanks.

You installed the new version of SUPERAntiSpyware but you neglected to update the database. You really should run it again and make sure that you update it first. Then run a new scan and attach the new log just to be safe.

Now print the below because YOU MUST NOT HAVE ANY OTHER PROGRAMS/PROCESSES RUNNING. ALL BROWSERS MUST be closed and so should all other processes that you can terminate. This includes AVG which could be getting in the way.
Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Meags\Local Settings\Temp

Now please try to run Malwarebytes and ComboFix again. Rename the program files if they do not run with their normal file names.

Now run Ccleaner. Only click the Run Cleaner button and nothing else!

    • the new SUPERAntiSpyware log
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • the Malwarebytes and ComboFix logs if they ran
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Here is the logs. I'll attach the avenger one in another post!

It is looking good though :)
No pop-ups! The shortcut icon on my desktop is gone. I surfed the web for 5mins or so without any hijacking of the browser.

    Thanks!!:)

See how much of a difference installing the correct updates for SAS made. Note: you did not update Malwarebytes. You should update it and run a new scan to be safe. Attach the new log. You need to remember that you must always get updates before scanning!!!!! This is critical and was stated in our instructions.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove some additional items that MGtools showed.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the new MBAM log from a properly updated program
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Seems to be running fine. Had AVG come up with an alert saying it had found 6 threats, all the same, win32 crypt one. Which is good it is blocking stuff.
    Malawarebytes still found threats aswell.

I don't get the WinPC fake antivirus program though. So far so good with my internet brower, hasn't been getting hijacked either.

Thanks for being so fast in replys. Really appreciated.

You did not disable AVG as requested before running ComboFix. Thus it appears to have interferred with ComboFix running properly. Let's try another fix. Shutdown AVG as requested.

Do you know what the below file is for? It should not be saved here!
    Code:
    2008-05-07 08:34 . 2008-06-24 13:21 15523560 ----a-w- c:\program files\U1 Setup.exe
Note you should uninstall SpywareBlaster 4.1 which is out of date and install the current version which you can get here: SpyWare Blaster

Now we need to use ComboFix again.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I close AVG from the icon in the tray and try to close the processes for it, however, as soon as I end the process it comes back again! How do I completely close AVG?

Also, I don't know what that file could be.

    Thanks.

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
